set new "autosave" toggle to off by default

there is a new feature that has an "autosave"  toggle per document opened. i have 1000s of excel files since the 1990s and do not want to turn off autosave for all of them. how can i disable this by default? id like to turn it off completely if possible, it's something that is not only unwanted, it's actively negatively impacting my workflow. i'm  considering trying to download an earlier version of excel that does not have the 'autosave' toggle. this is not to be confused with autorecover. 

if this is not possible, can this be escalated to the product team to add as a feature?

i cannot express how much i hate the autosave toggle and need it gone.

    Hello Simon,

    To disable the AutoSave feature in your Office 365 is ideal. You may please raise this as a feedback ticket in Office365 UserVoice.

    Meanwhile, we would like to set your expectation that in Office 365 ProPlus, you can disable it by adding registry items. You may check this link that talks about How to disable AutoSave in Office 365 ProPlus.

    Note: You can turn AutoSave Off for a file, and the program will remember to keep it off every time you reopen that file. This method will require discipline. If you switch it back On for a file, it will remember to keep in on for that file. See more here.

    It's extremely annoying to have as a default. I often open an old spreadsheet to use as a basis of a new file. If I forget to do a save as immediately I have to go back through the document history to restore the original file. Very annoying and time consuming.

    I agree, turning this off as default needs to be a priority. It is the most irritating feature of Excel 2016. To be clear, I dont mind it for Word but with excel if I create a model, I dont want it to save every time new inputs are entered. I want to play around with an excel file, change nubmers to see what happens, without saving it. 

    Oddly enough, when I create new files in Word, there is no autosave option. But in Excel, there is. And I hate it. In fact, I turn it off for every Excel file I have but wish it was available for Word.

    Microsoft, please review this. It is not a wanted feature.

    According to the developer I spoke with, the User Voice page is monitored closer by developers while pages like this are monitored by low level customer service agents - hence why 90% of the answers in these threads are canned Copy+Paste responses. He said that this is one of the best ways to get it on the dev team radar.

    That worked!   So relieved.  Have used MS office since before Windows (MS-DOS) and have a 30 year old habit of saving documents with specific name extensions (-1, -2, a, b, etc.) to easily go back to previous versions. I work on an international standards committee in a regulated industry and it's imperative to have saved various versions as one works toward a final. This autosave feature was driving me crazy.
