set new "autosave" toggle to off by default

This is worst feature MS could have possibly ever thought of. Ever since this came out Excel crashed 80% of the time I use it. Worst, I often open old excel files to reference them but don't want them save and the date changed. I simply to look up some info and then close the file, leaving the date when it was last actually edited.

The fix for this is simple MS. Just make an option that allows users to default the feature off instead of on. Then if a user wants to turn it on for a specific file they can. How is the not logical to every single person working at Microsoft?

Imagine this: I need to do a little what-if'ing with some data I have in Excel. I open an existing Excel file, slice and dice, sort a bit, remove some rows, delete a column or two, and finally get the summary data I need. Great! Excel, you are fantastic!

Then imagine the horror I feel when I realize all these 'changes' were saved. WITHOUT MY CONSENT OR INTENT!!!

I love you, Microsoft. I was in college writing Pascal programs when you started. I did the mainframe thing as a career, but really loved the smaller platform. I deferred the call from Apple and stayed true to Big Blue (IBM) and Little Blue (MS).

But, IBM was professional in everything they did. Everything. All the way down to user experience and documentation. MS, you fail in these areas.

I know I can turn AutoSave off. For each document. What I (and apparently a boatload of other people) really need is a default setting. Ya can't fool me and tell me it is too involved.

I, along with everyone else who posted here, will raise a pint in honor of a decision well made right after you give us this simple functionality.

Unfortunately, i do not know which one but this all started for me after i installed the anniversary update.

BTW Why doesn't Microsoft ever get involved in these debugging sessions. I am a developer myself and when someone complains about a feature not working or suddenly broken, i reach out to the person to see where the issue is. I am not seeing that in this forum. Kind of seems like a waste.

Recently, my solution is to suspend one drive syncing while i am using office products. This works well until i forget and then the file crashes on save. I wonder if they will ever fix it.

Do you know what update it was rolled into (ie the newest Windows 10 update, a new build of Onedrive, etc)? I am having the same problem and want to revert to an earlier version that does not have this issue.

8 hours on the phone with microsoft dealing with this issue. COMPLETELY USELESS AND 100% UNACCEPTABLE. Dealing with large excel files has become impossible and my autorecover pane is loaded with more than 30 different files. With large files I don't even have the option of opening it and turning off the AutoSave because the process of trying to upload it while simultaneously saving it causes excel to crash. Is basic file sharing too much to ask for?
