set new "autosave" toggle to off by default

there is a new feature that has an "autosave"  toggle per document opened. i have 1000s of excel files since the 1990s and do not want to turn off autosave for all of them. how can i disable this by default? id like to turn it off completely if possible, it's something that is not only unwanted, it's actively negatively impacting my workflow. i'm  considering trying to download an earlier version of excel that does not have the 'autosave' toggle. this is not to be confused with autorecover. 

if this is not possible, can this be escalated to the product team to add as a feature?

i cannot express how much i hate the autosave toggle and need it gone.

    Dealing with large excel files has become impossible and my autorecover pane is loaded with more than 30 different files. With large files I don't even have the option of opening it and turning off the AutoSave because the process of trying to upload it while simultaneously saving it causes excel to crash. Is basic file sharing too much to ask for?

    Eric:  If you haven't solved this problem yet, here is something to try.  Turn off your internet connection, ie unplug your network cable or turn off your wifi. Then open the large file.

    Have to genuinely agree that setting autosave one is a historically unacceptable move. File dates get modified automatically ruining the running historical timeframe of events.  Who at MS makes these decisions? Obviously no one in real world.  Autosave on should have only been default to on for new documents.  How about a notification to ask to keep Off instead? (with the ability to subsequently stop that notification).  Please do better.  Thanks

    I hate this AutoSave feature as do most Office 365 users if you cared to listen to us. 

    Your posts make it clear that we cannot globally turn off this feature in Excel.

    However, can we at least globally turn it off in Word?

    Please advise if there is a way to turn this annoying feature off in Word.

    It is my understanding that the Autosave setting can be turned off as default by un-checking the Autosave setting in the 'Save' section of the program Options. However it has to be done for each of the Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and for every individual Office installation that you use.

    Note that you may still need to unset AutoSave for any document created on a PC that you have not configured to disable it.
