To add to everything which has been said, I noticed the additional information in my environment:

Environment:

• Work computer joined to a domain
• Office365 ProPlus installed, latest version (1707)
• OneDrive for business configured with work account (O365 account)
• OneDrive personal configured with personal Microsoft account
• Logged in on the computer with the work account

The pop-up issue only occurs for files updated in the personal OneDrive.

It seems it's related to the latest office update (1707). At first I thought it's from my new laptop, but then I reproduced it on my home computer. Judging from the timestamps of the posts here - the issue started in 1707.

To the tech support questions:

1. Is the issue specific to one file or with every Word file? - every word file. Keep in mind the issue does not trigger each time.
2. Have you checked if your Office application is updated? - Yes, 1707.
3. Are you signed in to Office? - yes.
4. Have you associated your Microsoft account with Office? - yes

Observations:

* It only occurs in files stored in OneDrive, not in local storage.

* It occurs seemingly random (to my knowledge). Only when trying to save or exit a file.

* So far only Word and Excel files. Not occurring with Outlook and OneNote.

* It does not prevent saving. Saving works normally.

Just a reminder - in my experience:  When it requests your login, you can simply exit the pop-up (X) and it will go away and the file will be stored as expected (OneDrive).  Check with Windows Explorer for date and time.  This is my experience - 100% of the time.   Therefore, I have not downgraded - I just live with it for now, hoping for a fix in the next release.

Certainly if you want to get rid of this annoying pop-up you could downgrade but that might reverse some security patches.

For me, it appears that if I exit one time, the pop-up does not return until a reboot.

Again: Win 10 Pro, Office 2016 (not 365).

Which version of Office did you revert to, I am happy to drop some features to get rid of this. 

As a reference I experience exactly the same behavior as sf_mpls on my system. I have Office 365 as well, any word on a fix for this except downgrading?

I would like to add to this that this behavior also occurs in different Office products, Excel, PowerPoint for example. When I attempt to save a file to my personal OneDrive I receive the popup, when I use one of my Office 365 OneDrive folders I do not receive this pop up.

I think it is caused by the August update of Office. I had the same issue. 

I solved it by going back to the previous version of Office and I didn't get the pop up again
