Having the same problem, not only in Word, but also in Excel and PowerPoint files of which stored in OneDrive. Even with the latest Insider build upgraded (1709, 8509.2001), the issue still existed.

Windows 10 build 1703.16251 fresh install, then O365 installed. This issue occurred in O365 slow and fast ring.

    Today, it happens again.

Same thing is happening to me with office 365 and I'm doing the same thing, just clicking the x, no need to downgrade, but it is annoying and I thought initially I had a virus that was trying to contact a subroutine or something like that, so I really worried.

I just wish the get rid of that and fix the problem that seems to be all over the place, instead of requesting the same information over and over from each user that reports it.

I have the same problem with MS Excel, and the problem started after the latest Office updates, so you need to fix something on your side Microsoft.

I didn't have this problem until you introduced the new version with the auto-save button in the corner.

Furthermore, even when I enter the correct account and password it just asks for it again.

    Hi David,

I'm joining this thread today having just experienced this issue with the 1707 build of Office365. My setup and experience is exactly like VesoMitev in this thread, though I will not I had no issue with Word, only Excel.

Just letting Microsoft know it's a bug and we need a real patch. Thanks.

    Windows 10 Pro x64

    Office 365 v1707 (build 8326.2076 Click-to-Run)

The _vtc_rpc dialog issue also showed up after this update for Word, Excel and Powerpoint (I haven't opened the other programs yet but I'm assuming same problem).

    Office Repair: Done

    Cleared Credentials: Done

Doing the above did not work.

Below is what worked for me.

I put all my office documents into my OneDrive folders on my desktop so that it syncs up to OneDrive for me. I noticed the AUTO-SAVE switch on the upper left corner in from this latest update I assume. I have all on auto-update basically so I don't know if this was in previous updates.

When it's turned on, whenever you open a file for the first time from the OneDrive Folder (Didn't test from other non-OneDrive Folder since all my files are in OneDrive), it will initiate an auto-save to OneDrive and super annoyingly updates the Date Modified meta-data as well, it will also pop up the _VTC_RPC_

If you open the same file up again, the _VTC_RPC dialog doesn't show up again.

    In the OneDrive App settings.

Disabling this made the _VTC_RPC problem go away.

However you will have to put up with a little annoyance which is the save dialog everytime you close a file even if you did no edits.
