No non-Microsoft fonts show up in Word 16.9 or 16.9.1

When I updated to Word 16.9, all the fonts active on my system disappeared from Word; only the fonts inside the app show up. This is true whether I activate the fonts using a font manager (Suitcase Fusion) or as a system font (which I tried switching the fonts into--I experimented with the help of a technician from Suitcase Fusion). The same problem occurred when I tried updating to Word 16.9.1.

Mind you, these same fonts are all working fine in Word 15.4, to which I have reverted (thank you, Time Machine), but of course it's not terribly safe practice to stay with an older version of Word. And I need the other fonts because I have set up my professional workflow to rely on specific fonts--and the ONLY reason I purchased Office 2016 was for professional workflow. I'm a book designer and formatter/layout artist, and if I can't use my professional fonts in Word (since I have a few clients who insist on doc files), I will have to drop Office and find a program that will, since I do work for several presses that require specific fonts.

I should add that the non-Microsoft fonts ARE showing up in the updated Excel, which is the only other app in Office that I use.

ETA: The issue was fixed in 16.13.1. (Hooray!) It is broken again in 16.14. (Boo.)

Hi Everyone,

We got an update that the issue should be fixed in insider fast version 16.13 (Build 180401). Would you mind upgrading to this version and see if it works on your side? To get on the Fast level, click Help > Check for Updates > Join the Office Insider program to get early access to new releases > Office Insider Fast. You can refer to this article to know more what the Office insider is.

If you prefer to use the production version, such as version 16.12, we suggest you wait for some time and the fix will be rolling out in future release of the production version.

@Edeose, klein81, this thread mainly focus on the 3rd party font issue in Word 2016 for Mac. If you need any assistance about the other issues, please start a new thread in our forum and we will keep assisting you from there.

    @Sky, 16.10 does not fix the missing Gotham problem in Word. It is still missing from the menu, and existing documents that used Gotham are substituted with Calibri. The Gotham I have in my Mac right now is postscript, but the OTF version didn't work when I tried it either. (At this point, I can't recall which flavor of 16.X I tried it with.)

    In case you're wondering, Word 16.11 (build 18021400) on the Fast Insider program does not fix the missing Gotham problem either.

    I started going through the menu on 16.11 earlier today, and even fonts that appear in the menu sometimes don't actually call the correct font; they default to Calibri. Sometimes they appear in the document as Helvetica. The font substitution tool, meanwhile, says something like "All fonts are available and there are no substitutions.

    A reminder: these fonts all appear and work correctly in 15.41 and in every other non-Microsoft application I use. Gotham appears properly in spreadsheets in Excel 16.9, and from reports in various threads, so do many other fonts that are missing from Word. 

    I know about Gotham because I use it every day. Without an extensive review, I won't know what others of my fonts may also be missing until I have a reason to try to use them or open up an old document and get an unpleasant surprise.

    But unless Microsoft is willing to pay me what my clients do for work, I do not have the ability to do extensive QA on a product that should have had a good deal more than it got before it was released to the public.

    There are many open threads on font problems in 16.X and many Microsoft people giving not-always-consistent advice to users about what to try and where to post and what works and what doesn't. You really need to get this sprawling mess under control — and most of all, your engineers  need to fix what they broke.

    I just updated to 16.10, and have some interesting results:

    In Word 16.10, all TrueType and all OpenType fonts seem to open and work, whether they are activated by Word, the OS/Font Book, or by a third party font manager (Suitcase Fusion). But NONE of the PostScript fonts are even showing up, no matter how they are activated.

    In Excel 16.9 (which seems to be the latest version, since when I checked for more updates in Excel and I was told there are no more), ALL the fonts are available and they work, including the PostScript fonts.

    A few examples of PostScript fonts I have activated and usable in Excel but not in Word 16.10 are:

    Just to chime in with Brainsprint here - Gotham fonts do not show in 16.9, 16.9.1 16.10 or 16.11 of Word (or Powerpoint for that matter).

    They do however show in Excel 16.9.

    Gotham font is kinda our defacto company font for documents/presentations etc so a fix for whatever was broken in moving from v15.41 to v16 would be really appreciated.

    @Sky (and @Jumpstart IT):

    An update. I started my morning by removing PostScript Gotham and installing a borrowed copy of Gotham OTF. (The font version is 2.2.)

    OTF Gotham does appear in the font menu of Word 16.10 (180210), and it is recognized by my previously created documents.

    It also still appears in Excel.

    Comparing my font folder with the menu, it appears that at this point the PostScript fonts are the ones that continue to be missing. (Adobe Garamond, Bembo, Caslon 3, Caslon 540, Cheltenham... )
