Converting PPT to PDF on Mac Results in HUGE file

Over the last few weeks, I've had problems creating PDFs from Powerpoint. When I try to convert a 3-5mb file to a PDF it balloons up to 20-30mb which is way to large to email. 

From reading other threads, it looks like this might be a result of embedded fonts. I just had a recent update from microsoft that totes embedded fonts as a good thing, but I think it's terrible and I would like to turn them off. 

Does anyone have any suggestions? How can I turn off embedded fonts on a mac using PPT version 16.11? 

Any help would be much appreciated. Microsoft support has been utterly useless.

Hi all,

After a lot of frustration I finally figured it out.

While on Powerpoint, click on Apple and Preferences.

Click on General and change the setting Print Quality (Paper/PDF) Desired Quality to "Medium".

Hope this helps someone else, because it frustrated us for about 2 weeks.

While on Powerpoint, click on Apple and Preferences.

Small correction (at least on macOS 10.13 High Sierra and Powerpoint 16.18) - You want to click on "Powerpoint", not "Apple/"

The setting is under 

   Powerpoint > Preferences > General > Print Quality (Paper/PDF)

    This worked for me. The resulting pdf was slightly larger than the original ppt file. But at least it wasn't 5X the size.

    Hello Everyone - 

    I’ve had this exact problem since changing over to Office 365 MAC.  PowerPoint 16.20 (and earlier) exports a PowerPoint file as PDF but the file is HUGE. I do this regularly to downsize the file for sharing.

    1. Keep your ‘master pptx’ file as the highest resolution so you can experiment with what works best.
    2. Under “FILE” pull down - Choose “COMPRESS” and decide the lowest resolution you can accept for the picture quality - psi / (on-screen, HD, email, etc..)  save those experiment files as additional versions. You are looking for the smallest file and the most acceptable resolution. 
    3. Select "delete cropped areas" on the check box before processing. 
    4. Check the file sizes of all the saved files by version. 

    Export the PPTX file as a PDF.  Expect that it will be a huge export. Nominally my slide files go from a  60 Mb to an unbelievable 335 Mb export.  

    1. To Keep the quality as high as possible I open Acrobat Pro select the HUGE Pdf. 
    2. Under the “FILE” pulldown, select “SAVE AS OTHER” and “REDUCED FILE PDF” .  Save it as another version.

    My 335 Mb file just got reduced to 11.3 Mb.   I know it’s a two stage process and involves another program but works extremely well and I have found it to be more than worth it.  I have no idea why Microsoft doesn’t fix this “BUG” because it did not have this problem in earlier version before 365 Mac. I keep getting told it has to do with the “MAC resources” and MS not wanting to use them. 

    I can also use “print’ with lower quality but the slides end up looking like paper prints not a PPTX slide.
