"The file 'name of file' may have been changed by another user since you last saved it. In that case, what do you want to do? Save a copy. Overwrite changes."

I've been using Excel 2016/Office 365 and just recently, I started getting this message: "The file 'name of file' may have been changed by another user since you last saved it. In that case, what do you want to do? Save a copy. Overwrite changes."

I'm the only one working in my file. It is stored on the OneDrive for Business, which is the company supported.

How do I keep this message from appearing?  Or WHY is this message appearing?

I saw a similar post for Excel 2013, but no help was actually given.

Hi All,

We've contacted the related team and would like to share the latest updates here:

For Consumer products (e.g. Home,Personal,University), the issue should has been fixed in Office version 8229.2103.

For Enterprise products (e.g. Business Premium, Enterprise), the issue will be fixed very soon in few days, the expected Office version number is 8201.2140.

Thanks,

Jim

How do you patch these beyond available patches?  Both my Office and OneDrive are lower builds than what you recommend, but I can't find how to manually patch to a version higher.  MS Office says I'm up to date.

Same here - I tried the "cache flushing" tip (Registry edit QFE_Saskatchewan= 2) but the problem is still there.

By the way, I tried a second Save immediately after the first Save, and there was no error message. However, the error message appeared after I waited and pressed Save a third time. This may help with diagnosis, or it may not.

    Excel 2016 (Office 365) Version 1706 (Build 8229.2073) (32-bit).

OneDrive for Business 17.3.6917.0607 (not 6944.0627)

    • Still waiting to find out how to get the "Insider" updates. (However, this issue is not sooo annoying/dangerous that I need to solve it urgently, if a fix is in the pipeline.)
    • Also, seeing as the cache flushing fix didn't do it, should I delete that Registry key QFE_Saskatchewan, to avoid other troubles in future?

    Regards, John

Same issue here. Using OneDrive for Business 17.3.6917.0607.  I found that the issue goes away when completely shutting down OneDrive. Upon rebooting, if OneDrive is running, the issue will return after the initial save. I have a ticket in with my IT department, but these were our findings.

    Same issue for me:

    • question pops up after pushing the save button twice
    • OneDrive for Business: 17.3.6944.0627
    • Excel 2016: Subscription Product Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus. Version 1705 (Build 8201.2102 Click to run)

Hope to hear from you (Microsoft) soon

Since last update , it kept happening to me as well whenever I try to save after storing any data or make any changes.

Save a copy or overwrite changes, it's quiet annoying to see pop up windows every time. I'm using One Drive and Excel at the same time as others reported in here.
