The problem occurs under any front and any zoom I am using.
I just updated Office 365 to the latest version (1701) before posting this question and the problem still remains

My boss is having the same issue. We have Office 365 and he is using a Surface laptop. The cursor only disappears in the italic type
I have the latest video drivers installed on BOTH of my machines. Lenovo Laptop and Desktop with an Nvidia card. Simultaneous video driver issues on two very different machines? I doubt it. This isn't the first time this bug has cropped up in Word. It happened in 2007 and again a few years ago...
If both computers are from the same manufacturer, their drivers aren't necessarily that different (even though one computer is a desktop and the other one is a laptop).
When you observed the problem previously, what was the same and what was different compared to the situation now? That will give you the required clues to fixing this.

Have you tried updating the video drivers on your system?
The behavior described in this thread certainly isn't anything that can be observed on all systems running Word 2016.
Hello Microsoft, we are not the only people with this problem... This is absolutely ridiculous. You've been working on this product for 33 years. Fix it.
