Cursor disappears (only) over the italic texts (on PC)

The problem occurs under any front and any zoom I am using. 

I just updated Office 365 to the latest version (1701) before posting this question and the problem still remains

    As mysteriously as the problem appeared it has disappeared from my laptop, but not my desktop... any ideas on how to tell what's different?

    I have two Lenovo thinkpad with similar specs. The slightly older X1 yoga has this problem but not the newer X1 carbon. Very strange.

    Well we agree on the most basic point: this problem has an unknown cause and is unsolved.

    I'm open to suggestions.  I've tried everything already mentioned in the thread.

    Note that this thread deals with Word for Windows.

    I'm making use of Intel drivers myself (on HP laptops with Windows 10 and Windows 7), and I have not seen the issue.

    So far, the conclusion is that we don't know what is causing this problem.

    The video driver explanation is barking up the wrong tree.  One is Nvidia (it's a gaming PC that I built), the other is Intel (Lenovo Laptop).  This problem came about during some Office Update.  If I could, I'd go back and install one after the other until the problem cropped up.  This will be solved when someone at Microsoft notices or decides to locate the bug.  https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice\_word-mso\_mac/cursor-disappearing-over-italics/8e5b9350-ae44-4d49-982b-6cc2c141e88d
