The problem occurs under any front and any zoom I am using.
I just updated Office 365 to the latest version (1701) before posting this question and the problem still remains

As mysteriously as the problem appeared it has disappeared from my laptop, but not my desktop... any ideas on how to tell what's different?
Well we agree on the most basic point: this problem has an unknown cause and is unsolved.
I'm open to suggestions. I've tried everything already mentioned in the thread.

I'm making use of Intel drivers myself (on HP laptops with Windows 10 and Windows 7), and I have not seen the issue.
So far, the conclusion is that we don't know what is causing this problem.
I have the latest video drivers installed on BOTH of my machines. Lenovo Laptop and Desktop with an Nvidia card. Simultaneous video driver issues on two very different machines? I doubt it. This isn't the first time this bug has cropped up in Word. It happened in 2007 and again a few years ago...
If both computers are from the same manufacturer, their drivers aren't necessarily that different (even though one computer is a desktop and the other one is a laptop).
When you observed the problem previously, what was the same and what was different compared to the situation now? That will give you the required clues to fixing this.
