OneNote - All Notebooks Suddenly Empty

Anonymous

My world heavily linked into this application and nine notebooks were suddenly emptied off all their content - right in front of my eyes.  All I did was start it up, and was about to type when it all just went away and I got this message:

"There are no sections open in this notebook or section group

Click here to create a new section**"**

Now I did go to backup - but it's not restoring my notebooks the way they were.

These books are also located in OneDrive, but I can't bring them in.

I would like to know why this happened.

It appears that Microsoft OneNote is unstable and nobody has any real answers.

This concerns Office 2010.

Can someone please help.

Hi everyone - some update.

I believe this issue was resolved last Friday, 08/19. Please check Denise's answer here, and let us know if it is fixed with your latest update. To get the update immediately, open OneNote and click  File> Account > Update Options > Update Now.

If you're curious to learn more on the issue, check out this postmade by OneNote Program Manager Grant in the Reddit community.

If you're not seeing the fix, do respond and let us know.

Best,

Noyonima

I also experienced this issue in my OneNote 2010 which runs on Windows 10 Creators Update.

Finally, the following article provide a workaround for the issue:

Resolve the 0xE0000784 (Web DAV is Disabled) error in OneNote

    Update:

Next day, I experienced that the same issue still happen unfortunately.

This workaround doesn't appear to be effective.

My situation has taken a turn for the worse. Since I was losing all my Notebooks so frequently, I turned off auto-sync.

Five days later, after lots of changes to my OneNote content, I decided to try to manually re-sync. All notebooks disappeared. Examining them online, I found that they were, naturally, five days out of date!

So I'm left with outdated notebooks online, a set of daily backups that I had configured in Options, a bunch of "Misplaced Sections" and "Open Sections" at the bottom of my Notebook list in the OneNote program.

    What a mess.

I tried to get the MS support person to guide me through restoring things back to normal, but she said it was too complex and wanted to charge me $99 to do it.

Microsoft Answer Desk, huh? Here's what they said:

"It looks like the issue is more complex and will take significant time to resolve. There are two premium support options available to you. We guarantee this issue will be fully resolved to your satisfaction. The first plan which is our Premium Software Support comes with a 30-day warranty should this particular issue reoccur in the near future. The second, more popular choice for customers is our Assure Plan which covers not only this issue but any future issues you may have with Windows, Office, Viruses and Malware and also includes PC Tune-up services to ensure your system runs as efficiently and protected as possible; for one full year you can contact Answer Desk to resolve any of these issues with the peace of mind that experts like myself that know your Microsoft products better than anyone will offer complete end-to-end support."

Lovely. That a $99 charge for this, by the way.

The support chat person said she's always having her Notebooks disappear. She said "just wait a few hours and they should be back."

I mentioned that OneNote had automatically backed up my Notebooks, and asked how to restore the backup. Here's the conversation (reference number: **********):

    3:09 am

    Me

Yes, there are a LOT of folders in there

    3:09 am

    *support*

Check for your file because I am confident that it is there.

    3:10 am

    Me

I'm not just missing "a" file. I'm missing all of my Notebooks.

    3:11 am

    Me

I do see folders in there with the names of my notebooks

    3:12 am

    Me

How do I restore them? Will they replace the "empty" ones in my desktop app, or create new notebooks?

    3:12 am

    *support*

I see, thank you for that information Scott.

We are all still experiencing the same issues no matter what we've tried!  Just like last August!  Same thing.  It's nothing we can fix ourselves...
