Hi there,

Has anyone come across this issue:

It appears to be temperamental but even if you get a Data Graphic on the next one you'll try will fail. It refer to all display types. The problem does not occur in Visio 2016. Once I uninstalled Microsoft Visio 2013 (KB3115428) update the problem goes away.

Best Regards

Greg

I was getting the same error after KB3115428 was installed until it was removed.  I am using Widows 7 and Visio 2013.  The problem occurs when I added external data (from SharePoint or Excel) to a graphic and then tried to display it on the graphic, i.e., when I went to Data tab, selected "Data Graphics" and Edit Data Graphic..." or right mouse clicked on the graphic and selected the same options.  It was not a problem with external data added prior to the update, only external data added after the update.

Now, the security department at my job is saying that my computer is on a quarantine list probably because of KB3115428 being uninstalled.  So, I'll probably have to deal with this bad "fix" again.

    Hi Shakun,

As Greg say's I'm surprised you can not reproduce, this happens all the time on v2013 above patch August 9, 2016 15.0.4849.1003. Note It does not happen on the first data graphi created and saved, but any subsequest one will give the error. This happens on all installs we have tried both corporate and home.

Re the one I thought worked, it only workd the first time as expected. I get other new diagrams it doesn't even work the first time.

A couple of days ago I remove the data graphic from the master xml file as a test. When I went back into visio I could add a single data graphic before it gave the same error.

I can only suggest that if you are failing to reproduce then the scenario is not quite the same. As the MS Technical Advisor has already reporoduced the error before handing off to yourselves, I suggest you look closer at their set-up.

In the mean time I'll send a file to the email address, it only takes 10 seconds to produce.

If you need any further info please let me know.

    Cheers Aaron...

    Hi, Shakun.

I'm creating a set of diagrams to document infrastructure for a major aeronautics firm.  I'm using Windows 10 with Visio 2013 Pro.  I use the Edit Data Graphic feature along with Shape Data to document and display various information about the objects in the diagram.

I was cruising along just fine until the firm deployed KB3115428.  That stopped me in my tracks.  I could not create a new object and edit the data graphic.  I got the same error that Greg and Aaron got above.  There are many more people out there that this affects, talking about it in various Internet forums on Vision.

I have done extensive testing and found that I could copy objects for which I'd already created a data graphic and edit the data graphic.  I could not edit the data graphic of any new objects I created on the diagram.  I created completely new diagrams and found the same thing.  In one instance, I created a new diagram from a blank template, added the Network Details shapes, and was able to edit one data graphic.  After that, I couldn't edit the data graphics of other objects in that diagram.  Other than that one time (out of perhaps 10 attempts), I am unable to edit the data graphics.

There are about 30 people using Visio 2010 and Visio 2013 in my architecture group.  I checked with other architects using Visio 2013 and they have the same issue.  It doesn't affect them as much, as they are mostly using the UML template and don't used Edit Data Graphics.

I'm part of just one small group in the firm, so I don't know how widespread the problem is and how it affects the company.  Our global support team is aware of the issue and is withdrawing the patch from our automatic update packages until the issue is resolved.  I've had the patch removed (twice, due to automatic updates) and now am able to work just fine.

    Thanks....Pete Pedersen

    Hi Shakun,

In case you need any help I'm happy to provide more details, although I'm very busy at the moment. Could do a quick desktop sharing session if required.

I've provided quite a lot of details to the MS support team already, including the diagrams I've recreated the error on.

All I could add here is that the issue appears to be happening not on every first attempt of adding a data graphic item, but it quite consistently does on any subsequent try.

    Best Regards

    Greg

    Thanks for your reply Greg.

This made it to the product group just yesterday. We tried at our end and couldn't reproduce the issue.

I will check with the Support team for anything that we might be missing because of which we are not able to repro here. Would appreciate your patience. We are actively investigating this.

    Thanks,

    Shakun
