Excel 2016 Mac Problem Bug Linking Cells Between Worksheets

I have multiple worksheets in my excel document. I am trying to link data from a cell on worksheet 2 to a cell on worksheet 1. I enter "=" in the cell on Worksheet 1 and then click on Worksheet 2 and go to the cell that I want to reference/link. When I click on it, nothing happens in the cell on Worksheet 1. Yet the formula appears on a random cell in Worksheet 2. I have had no problem doing this before and the same workbook/document has multiple inter-sheet links from previous work I have done on it. All of a sudden this problem started happening today. Please help me figure this out. Very frustrating. Thank you. Brad.

I’d like to make a summary about this case, so other community members who come across this thread will easily find the useful information:

Issue description:

The formula/value will be in a random cell after linking cells between worksheets when you store the workbooks in Dropbox.

More information:

Original, we have identified the issue will disappear when we go to the Dropbox settings and set the Dropbox badge to "Never show"..

Now, the issue should have gone away. It seems that the issue has been fixed by Dropbox in their latest release. For more information, refer to:

    I notified Dropbox about the problem and they're tackling it as well. Here's part of the email response I got.

    It looks like the issue may be related to the Dropbox badge, you can [remove the badge] by clicking on the Dropbox icon in your system tray, then the gear icon, then Preferences. You'll then have the option to choose when you'd like to see the Dropbox badge: "Always Shown", "If others are viewing" and "Never Shown."

    To completely disable the Dropbox badge, select "Never Shown" from the drop down menu. That will prevent Dropbox from showing the badge on your Office documents. but should resolve the issue for you while we work on fixing this at our end.

    This seems to work! only tested with a single users. The Dropbox badge seems to be the cause. Will report as more come in from lunch and we test it more .

    Same problem here, but with many machines running different versions of OSX and Office 2011 and 2016!

    Troubleshot it for days as it kept getting worse and more people started having this problem. I even thought it could be a virus. After ruling out so many other factors, determined the only common factor in all users is Dropbox.

    As the clients update to the latest Dropbox version, this starts to happen.

    Spent the last hour trying to get in touch with their tech support to report this problem.

    Hi all - Thanks again for all the attention to this issue.  You should be able to avoid this issue by disabling the  Dropbox badge.  We are still investigating the root cause, so I don't know how this will finally be resolved, but you can workaround it for now.

    To disable it, go to the Dropbox settings and set the Dropbox badge to "Never show".
