MS Word 2016 comment bubbles not numbered

I am using MS Office 2016 and it seems that comment bubbles are no longer numbered like they were in previous versions. When a reviewer using an older version of Word refers to a specific comment by its number, I cannot tell which comment they are referring to because the comments are not numbered in Word 2016. Does anyone know why this feature was removed or how to fix it? It is extremely frustrating that the numbering of comments has been removed. Thank you,

In Word 2016 (and 2013), comment numbers only display when you look at the print preview (at File | Print) or when you print the document, unfortunately. As a workaround, you can apply paragraph numbering to the Comment Text style.

When you modify a style, the change only applies to the current document. If you select "Add to template" it adds to YOUR template. It won't affect any template that other users have (even if the name of that template is identical to the template on your computer).

Is there any way to create this 'style' change to add numbering when working with someone else's document? I work with students writing dissertations and need to use comment numbering when commenting on their work. Thanks

If you modify the style in the student's document, then it will remain modified when you return the document to the student provided that the student doesn't have "Automatically update document styles" enabled for the Normal template (which would be unusual).

You can modify the style manually, but you'd have to do it for each student document separately, of course.

It would be possible to create a macro which adds the style automatically to all documents you open, but that may not be what you want.
