MS Word 2016 comment bubbles not numbered

I am using MS Office 2016 and it seems that comment bubbles are no longer numbered like they were in previous versions. When a reviewer using an older version of Word refers to a specific comment by its number, I cannot tell which comment they are referring to because the comments are not numbered in Word 2016. Does anyone know why this feature was removed or how to fix it? It is extremely frustrating that the numbering of comments has been removed. Thank you,

In Word 2016 (and 2013), comment numbers only display when you look at the print preview (at File | Print) or when you print the document, unfortunately. As a workaround, you can apply paragraph numbering to the Comment Text style.

    How is this done??

    FYI..in Word 2016, 365 there is NO comment numbering regardless of the view. This was removed stupidly and purposefully by Microsoft. Tell us how to number ANYTHING in someone else's document...THAT is the bigger problem. Editing/publishing/Dissertation work is using someone else's work that needs to have numbered comments otherwise this product (MS Word 2016 365 ) is worthless!! HELP!

    As I wrote, a comment number is shown (following your initials) for comment balloons when you look at the Print Preview (found at File | Print) and also in an actual printout:

    If you want comment numbers in Print Layout view, you will have to make use of a macro. The following one by MVP Doug Robbins can be run multiple times after you have added, removed or rearranged comments:

    Sub NumberComments()

    'Macro created by MVP Doug Robbins, April 2017

    Dim i as Long

    Dim rngComment as Range

    With ActiveDocument

        For i = 1 to .Comments.Count

            Set rngComment = .Comments(i).Range

            With rngComment

                If Left(.Text, 7) = "Comment" Then

                    .Text = "Comment " & i & " " & Mid(.Text, Instr(.Text, "-"))

                Else

                    .Text = "Comment " & i & " - " & .Text

                End If

            End With

        Next i

    End With

    End Sub

    For installation instructions, see http://www.gmayor.com/installing_macro.htm.

    I tried downloading this macro loading set of instructions and received this error:

    Service Unavailable

    HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable.

    What are you trying to download? All you have to do is open a Visual Basic Editor window (for example by pressing Alt+F11 or by clicking the Visual Basic button on the Developer tab) in Word, create a Module in the Normal project and paste in the code from my reply in January. Click the Save button on the toolbar. Once you have created and saved the template, you can assign a keyboard shortcut to your newly created macro, so that you can easily run the macro.
