I had this issue for many months and it was very frustrating--It was so frequent that I switched to Pages for a while. Since I have updated Word (running V 15.28 (160927)) for 2-3 weeks, I have not had 1 serious error. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm on a late 2013 MBA 11, running El Cap 10.11.6

I thought it might be helpful to read a post from someone who has had some good luck...

Hi everyone,

On 9/13/16, we released update 15.26 (160910), the September feature update for Office 2016 for Mac. Please install the update by clicking Help > Check for Updates > Check for Updates. Our engineering team has been intensively working on the ‘serious disk error’ issue and feel that this latest update will resolve it.

If you continue to experience problems, please reply to this thread with the following so that we can further isolate the cause:

  1. A screenshot of the About dialog (that shows the Office build number).
  2. A screenshot of the serious disk error dialog.
  3. The output of running ls ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Library/Application\ Support/Microsoft/Temp from Terminal.
  4. The output of the command defaults read  com.microsoft.Word from Terminal if the issue happens in Word; or defaults read com.microsoft.Outlook if the issue happens in Outlook.

If you continue to experience the same ‘serious disk error’ issue that you did before installing the update, let us know and we will reach out to you in a private message to see if you’re willing to have an engineer speak to you directly to get it resolved.

If you experience any other file-related issues (other than the ‘serious disk error’), let us know that, too.

Again, we apologize for the frustration around this issue, and hope that this solves it.

Best,

-Erik, Office Newsroom

Yet again, the newest fast insider update (plus following the above instructions re the terminal command) DO NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. I did both and the error messages ARE STILL HAPPENING. E.g, just now: "Word cannot save or create this file. The disk may be full or write-protected. Try one or more of the following..." HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT MICROSOFT STILL CANNOT MANAGE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM??????????????????????????????????

Exactly and why are only some of us getting this problem and not others?  This has to be answered.

Time to collate - is everyone who is having this problem have a new mac? I got mine in Feb 16. Apple can't be ruled out of this if being objective about potential sources of the problem. All stats count.

When is MS going to send out a formal communication addressing this issue?  As it is not fit for purpose their responsibiity is to communicate and address issues of compensation for tangible negative impacts  - like loss of dissertations, client presentations etc

I don't believe that a software bug takes this long to fix. It is simply not being prioritised and I believe this will go into next year.  There are no negative financial implications for MS and we are a minority, albeit significant, for us (only).

I am fed up waiting on a response and want to know legally what can be done to pressure MS into taking responsibility.

As said, it does not take this long to fix - there will be a tiny team working on this and being channelled off into other priority areas as they arise with more direct financial benefit - like new products, different updates etc - as all teams are likely overloaded with work and as all IT middle managers and independant software co's do - say yes to everything even when they know they can't deliver.

I just know this will be taking a 5 minute AOB slot in a weekly/fortnightly update and barely cited in reports with a 'keep on it lads' dismissal by tech leads.

So what are the options to get MS to move on getting this fixed -as clearly the current approach will not resolve the matter.

Logic would say we are absolutely NOT a tiny minority - it's just a minority of people who have found their way to this forum - it sure took me long enough and I'm pretty good at online searches. Many people have MS Word for Mac - I am sure many of them have called tech support and gotten exhausted and just moved on to other solutions, like using Pages. Maybe what would make this a higher priority would be (1) publicizing the issue elsewhere to gather additional users to organize a class action lawsuit and (2) if people good with social media start tweeting about it in as many places as they can.
