Thanks for posting. Happy to answer your questions.

1. OSX 10.11.5 and Word 15.23.2. I first noticed the error at the end of May, so whatever Word version was current then - I update whenever they become available (except for the most recent one, as I just learned I shouldn't be updating while writing a PhD...?) 
2. No.
3. Error message reads: 'There is a serious disk error on file ~Word Work File S{C5B327F9-1237-B547-BC00-8215F4610034}.tmp.'
4. The error usually occurs when Word has been open for a while, and is usually triggered by formatting - i.e. beginning a numbered list, or copying and pasting. Word then freezes and I have to force quit, losing information. 
5. Not to my knowledge. 
6. linkCreation.dotm is the only thing that comes up under 'Global templates and add-ins'. 
7. Logged in as Admin. 
8. I have started to just reboot my Mac whenever I want to use Word (or shut it down overnight) and so far this seems to have stopped the problem.

I'm a member of the Word engineering team investigating this issue.

I had some questions I was hoping those encountering this issue could answer to help us.

1. What version of Office and OSX do you have?   Do you recall the earliest build of Office that you saw this issue?
2. Do you have any of the following software installed?   MacKeeper, software from SmithMicro (ex. StuffIt), any sort of software that actively scans files or attempts to clean up disk space
3. The error mentions a filename like “Word Work File <letter>{...}.tmp”.   What <letter>’s have you seen the error for?   (The letter indicates the type of temporary file that it is.  For example, “S” is a Scratch file. For more info, you can look at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/211632).
4. Under what circumstances have you seen the error? For example,
   • Does it only show after Word has been running for a long time or after opening a lot of documents?
   • Does it only show when working with large/complex documents?
5. Are you using a custom Normal.dotm file?
6. Do you have any Add-ins installed?  See under "Tools / Templates and Add-ins...".
7. On your Mac, what kind of user account are you logged in as?   Administrator? Standard?   You can check under "System Preferences / Users & Groups". On the left you should see "Current User" with your account name and type of account.
8. Do any of the following seem to ease the issue?
   • Launch Word (or Outlook if that's where you've hit the issue). Quit cleanly (i.e. don't Force Quit). Launch and quit once more.
   • Rebooting your Mac

1.  Office 15.24,  OS X 10.11.5.  Am not sure but at least 2 updates ago 15.22 or 21
2. Started after installing MacKeeper but have deinstalled it after about a week.  Am running CleanMyMac and have been for several years now.

4. Usually after leaving the machine on and then trying to edit in either Word or Outlook ... but almost always Word  is running, just minimized. Size of the file is not a factor as the error occurs even when no file is loaded in word but just beginning a new document in which some manipulation (cut-and-paste or moving words).  Seems to occur when waking up the Mac and then resuming work in Word or even starting a new file.  Saw something similar in Excel when trying to create a new worksheet but that seems to be resolved with 15.23.

7. Administrator
8.  Quitting or force quitting Word and then relaunching.  Restarting or rebooting the machine.  All of these resolve the issue.

Not networked outside of just wifi for internet- sorry for lack of clarity. Was just trying to convey it was dissimilar to your setup, Steven.
