There is a serious disk error on file ~Word Work File S{A1F41F30-FB84-B649-9F8A-F0A7D2698BBF}.tmp

It seems to be behaving erratically as when I get the serious disk error message I have always been able to resave it under a different name. I have not had any documents delete themselves.

But it worries that this is happening so randomly and it is not acceptable.  So Apple erased my operating system and I reinstalled MS 15:22.1.  

Apple told me that they knew when you opened word that a temp file will show in the Finder.  They said not to worry about it.  It should disappear when you close the doc.  So far only one temp file has stayed on my system.  I am keeping a log and will send it to them so we can monitor it together.  I have had no error messages as yet and for the last couple to days Finder is showing no corrupted temp files. 

MS also did request logs from my original post on this.  They said that it looked like Word was using a lot of CPU when it started.  They also said something about bad coding in the start up disk.  It was at that point Apple reluctantly stepped in and agreed to wipe the operating system and monitor my computer.  MS did request activity logs but when I told them I was working with Apple they disappeared. 

I think it has to be proactively pursued with both apple and MS.  Apple do not have a comparable programme to handle large word processing files - pages is just not up to it.  And the majority of users will be using MS Office if they are using laptops for business or studies.

Therefore no release should have gone ahead with these known issues (similar problems seem to go back years) - losing critical work is not to be considered an acceptable by- product.  The laptop is not fit for purpose when a customer feels they cannot trust it to carry out basic tasks that support their work.  

So I will report on this link if I start getting any error messages again and I will supply log to Apple to make sure the odd things its doing now is not disk related. First sign of an error message and I will contact MS as well.

Oh no.  So far I haven't lost a document - I have to re-save and the original gets corrupted but the new version is ok. As I am about to embark on writing up a thesis can you tell me how it lost your work - I can understand how you must have felt at that point!  I am very worried I will be at completion point and I will have the same outcome as it is rather unpredictable when it gets triggered and over what triggers it. 

Its just not acceptable that anyone is put in that position - why are we bothering with these computers then if it is a better solution to handwrite!

 Sure. I've lost work with Word recently twice.

1. I finished and saved a document. I attached it to an email and sent it to a co-worker. They were unable to open the document. I checked locally and found the file in my Documents folder. The file size was strangely 0 KB. I opened the file and it was still there. I closed it again and emailed it again. Same result. Weird. I opened it locally one more time, Word crashed, and the file *disappeared* from the folder.
2. I was writing up a document for about 30 mins. When I was nearly finished, I thought I should save my work. I clicked the save button. I got the "Serious Disk Error" message. The document disappeared. It was not in the "Open Recent" menu. It was not able to be restored. It was just gone.

Because of these instances I'm currently not able to use Word for critical tasks or important work.
