Excel comments not displaying

Comments weren't working when I first got Excel 2016 early this year, then finally, several versions later, it got fixed, but now with Mac version 16.17, comments are BROKEN AGAIN!!  Except this time it's worse: Previously, show/hide wouldn't work; you'd have to right click "Show comment" (making it stay on) in order to see it. With 16.17, even THAT doesn't work -- when I right-click "Show comment," it *still* doesn't show up.  How could I even read them now?  

@KazooPagel, thanks for the tip that at least lets me see the comments.  However, I cannot get it to close.  A second click makes it editable.  I also tried to click the "Show/Hide Comments" button in the Review ribbon, but it won't click -- it just flashes when I click it but it won't activate.  So now I can't get the comment I unveiled to hide again.

Microsoft, you have been doing Excel since the 1980s!  I've had Office for Mac 2004 & 2011, and never had a problem.  Excel 2016 has been out two years now and you still can't get comments to work correctly?  Or you fix them, and then break them again with the next release?? This is crazy!

I have the same problem. Comments don't display on rollover. Used to work fine. Now I don't even get the arrow and line. Mouseover a cell with a comment and nothing happens. I have to right-click and select 'edit comment'. Much less convenient and not the intended behavior. 

This is office 365 for Mac, version 16.17

October 2018 - two years, still not fixed. Great work Microsoft.

My excel file has had all the comments wiped out completely which is causing me untold grief at work!

I already noted this on another thread which informed me to update to Insider Fast and that would resolve the problem, it hasn't and now apparently my worksheet has no comments and but now has some "Notes" which are two comments I have added since this problem started.

Why on earth would you waste time changing the name of comments to notes and messing around with a function that has worked fine for years?

How will I get all the comments back from the original file? It also removed the freezed panes, the filters, changed the colour of highlighted cells and completely re-sized the columns so they are way smaller than the text within them.

I can't re-boot an old version of the file as it gets updated multiple times each day.

As mentioned before I am on a Mac using High Sierra (not Mojave!), using latest version of excel (16.19), i open the file online through 365 and then click edit in excel, the comments dont show in either format

To All Users who Need Comments in Excel -

I've fought this problem for most of a year and found that installing a previous working version of Excel solves the problem and allows me to get on with my work.  I then monitor the new Excel releases and if a big change occurs I may install and try that.

I hope that Microsoft will start treating this problem with the professionalism that it deserves.  Regularly breaking essential functionality is a sign of a software team that is not well managed.
