Excel comments not displaying

I have excel 2016, and the comments have been working fine.  Just recently it does not display comments when I mouse over them. The show/hide command in the review tab is greyed out.  I never had this problem before, and never had to see if the comment show/hide feature was active or not.

    HERE'S THE ANSWER, F I N A L L Y  :-)

    Office 365's latest updated version don't have this issue.

    In other words, if you start a new file and start working on it - these problems don't occur.

    However, there is a problem when you use your old files and try to open it with Office 365. There seems to be some compatible issues there.

    After months of frustration, and working with right click and EDIT COMMENT, and having to switch tabs to get rid of the comments box ... I ended up with the file shutting down, each time I wanted to view the comment.

    So, I chatted with a customer support. And after 2 hours of interacting with the seniors - we were able to find out the COMPATIBILITY ISSUE.

    Basically, if you copy your old files where you have your comments stored and paste it on a new file, then the comments can be viewed as you hover over the cell as before.

    If you don't do this, then apparently there is no solution offered by Microsoft.

    So, I changed my files by copying them into a new file, and it works perfectly alright.

    Yes, it's a pain and time consuming to copy and paste on to a new file - but it's a lot better after having lot of frustrations in trying to work with the old ones.

    Like the rest of you, the latest version of Excel for Mac I've installed (v.16.17) has the "hover" problem.  COMMENTS still do not display as they did in earlier versions with a simple "hover".  Sure is a mystery why its not been fixed. 

    I did find one stopgap technique that has saved me time and that will display one COMMENT at a time.  Thought I'd share.    Select the REVIEW tab on the top bar of the sheet display  and leave it open.  When I want to see a comment, I click on the cell and then hit the show/hide comment icon within the REVIEW.  One click displays the COMMENT for the selected cell and a second click closes it.  With a little practice, I can now move along quickly.  

    I, too, expected more by now from MS Excel. i too would like to see the "hover" feature returned to its original reliability.

    I have similar problem. Some comments on the same file are visible and some others I see only the arrow and unable to edit.
