Cannot open downloaded Word documents after Windows 10

Hello,

I cannot open downloaded Word documents (powerpoint included) that I download onto my computer from email or my online class. This happened after I downloaded Windows 10. My spyware is turned off and it does not change anything. Any tips if there is something else turned on I can't figure out to open them? I tried going through word and in a "repair" view but it still wouldn't open.

    Stefan, I could just kiss you. I've been trying to download, save, open and run some programs due to having to reinstall Vista again because of a major bug I picked up. Being that I have no idea what the **** I'm doing, I've been having a really fun time here. I even have "Vista For Dummies", which is too smart for me. But this morning, after playing with this PC for 4 days now, trying to put things back the way they were and reading questions and answers in forums from 7am to 11pm that have gotten me no where, I finally found yours. I really want to thank you, you wonderful MVP. Consider yourself hugged and kissed.

    M$ is the manufacturer of Windows 10; you avoid holding it accountable for its defective software. 

    I have done no such thing. Of course Microsoft is responsible for Windows, and Microsoft is responsible for Office. I have never stated anything else.

    And by the same logic, third-party software creators must accept responsibility for their software.

    As a developer of numerous Word Add-Ins, I feel that I am qualified to disagree completely with the vendor to whom you spoke.  The issue is with THEIR SOFTWARE.   Presumably they developed it to work on a platform supplied by Microsoft, so they should make it work on that platform.

    M$ is the manufacturer of Windows 10; you avoid holding it accountable for its defective software.  Here is from the vendor of the 3rd party software:  'In a perfect world, the makers of any such third-party application should bear the full responsibility of making it compatible.  But Mr. Blom ignores the amount of consumer hair-pulling over the vagaries of Microsoft software. For decades, Microsoft has as a rule pushed out products inadequately QA’d and/or documented for normal consumer use, and its “fixes” can also create new problems while solving others. This being the case, and that Microsoft has made getting technical support for its products a difficult, unreliable and even expensive enterprise, his dismissal is, in the kindest words possible, glib and oversimplified.'

    Yes, manufacturers are responsible for their software. There is no doubt about that.
