Hi Guys,
I have recently noticed that my Excel for Mac has become incredibly slow. I am using an almost new iMac and have a business enterprise solution account with the programme installed on 4 office computers, however this problem is only affecting my computer.
The spreadsheet I am using has less than 100 rows and takes 5-10 seconds to load whenever I click on another cell let alone try to edit a value or place a new value in.
This is heavily affecting my productivity at work. I have tried to fix this by removing bad fonts and giving the iMac a general cleanse but it's not had any affect on Excel performance.
Computer specs are:

Hey I think I just fixed this for myself. Looking at another forum post regarding Microsoft Word 15.29.1 acting very slow too, it says to go to: - System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy Tab > Accessibility (on left menu), and disable any 3rd party apps that have certain controls over your computer.
On my laptop, I installed a window manager called "Divvy" years ago (it updates regularly), that allows me to resize app windows using keyboard shortcuts. Once I disabled this app from "controlling my windows", MS Office 15.29.1 *(specifically Excel) works beautifully.
Try it and let us know!

I found this on-line and it helped me:
Go to settings, click on Accessibility, go to Display, click on Reduce Motion and Reduce Transparency.
This helped my Excel experience on the Mac.

I had this problem today and figured out that my problem occurred because I had pasted in a couple of characters that the program was having trouble reading. My spreadsheet contains a TON of text froma variety of sources in multiple languages and one of the sources came with a character that resulted in a "square" shape in Excel. This killed everything (on my Activity Monitor, excel was taking up 100% of my CPU).
I deleted the squares and it solved everything.
Thanks for advise. In my case it was Dropbox.
Latest Office update has totally solved the issue for me!
What steps have you taken?
(SafeBoot - does some house cleaning such Empty Cache Files.)
Then restart Computer.
If the above does not seem to help:
Send a Copy to another of your other Computers. Open on that machine compare speed of opening and and any actions.
If works okay you may have some issue with your computer. (You may have a conflict with some control panel or utility just installed on your machine).
If there is no improvement in speed, and spread sheet is not too large:
Formulas and Values only. Reformat Column or Row Formats as needed. 6. Now save under new name. 7. Try manipulating new document. (on your Machine). If works then you had some type of corruption which would slow down or kill a Document (Spreadsheet or Database).
**Added Dec 1, 2015:**Here is something you might try if you haven't accumulated a lot of special Fonts and don't mind experimenting. I read from at least one person on the Forums, that doing a Font Reset in FontBook will speed up Office greatly. It is just from one Person though. Here are his steps.
Caution from me: A Font Reset is not to be taken lightly. What it does is remove "all" fonts other than fonts that come with OS X, and places them in the Trash. Then you must Restart Computer. Its possible you will have to reload Office Fonts, and other Font packages such as for Acrobat. And a number of Drawing and Design applications that place their fonts within special font packages.
Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook Runs extremely slow.
(Warning!!!! Under no circumstances at this time empty Trash!!!) 6. Restart Computer. 7. Go back to and open FontBook look at Left pane of open window. 8. See if Microsoft Office Compatible Fonts is listed.
If not go to Trash remove from Trash reinstall them.
If they have been untouched then just quit FontBook. 9. Now open Word, Excel. PowerPoint or OneNote and see if speed has increased.
If this Helped You are going to have to take the time to restore your fonts out of trash, until the slow down reoccurs. At this point you'll have to leave out that, or those fonts, that cause the slowdown.
(end of Suggestion)
I have too many fonts I have purchased over the years some I use daily such as ITC Benguiat in Word, and Minion Condensed in Excel and if I am typing up recipes I use Arial Narrow. Plus I have some fonts I use for headline or Header Footer. So I won't be trying this. It appears some Fonts affect the speed of opening and use. When No font should affect speed opening and Use. Fonts and speed has been an issue with 2016 since it has been out as Beta product.
