It is impossible to edit some documents because of VERY slow, jerky, jumpy, laggy, erratic, stuttering cursor movement (horizontal worse than vertical). I have been forced to go back to using Word 2011. I am a professional novelist and cannot practice my trade with Word 2016!! This is very disappointing.
As a novelist I work with large word count simply formatted documents with a file size of less than 1M. I have not experimented to find a cut off point with regard to word count but documents in the 100K word size or more (less than 1M file size) exhibit this slow, jerky, laggy cursor movement problem. Small documents in the 5K word range do not have this problem on any of my notebooks.
It can take 10 seconds or more to move the cursor from the right to left side of the page (or vice-versa). This slow erratic cursor movement is especially troubling when trying to select a few words (highlighting them) for editing. It is very frustrating.
I have experimented and found that brand new documents in 2016 file format exhibit this problem. I have created documents with zero text formatting and they have this problem. I removed all formatting in these test documents by copying and pasting ASCII text into the newly created 2016 format doc from original Word 2011 documents.
I have replicated this same problem on three different macbook computers all with SSD and max ram. None of these computers are running with more than 5% CPU utilization (running nothing else except Word 2016). All of these notebook computers edit the same files just fine using Word 2011.
Track changes is not turned on, nor is any other unusual "feature" or function. This problem occurs in all display modes: draft, layout, etc.
**All these notebooks are running the latest version of Yosemite and all with 100% up to date software.

I confirm quitting Dropbox solves that ridiculous M$oft lag for me.

Additional Debugging-Information for Microsoft:
The problem exists not just on Macs and with additional software, but event on a freshly installed Win10 Enterprise 64bit (v16.07), where nothing other than Office 365 was installed. This means that Word is already extremely slow even without plugins, Dropbox etc. At least in our company, the problem does not occur on machines with low-resolution displays (i.e. max. Full HD), while it is very common on PCs with high-dpi displays (like the Surface Book).
Well..... Microsoft has done it again!
The "snail's pace editing" problem, that had PRETTY MUCH disappeared for me, has now reared it's ugly head again with Word 15.25. Saw suggestions about Dropbox (v9.4.49) integration, and have disabled it, but not having any effect. Still occasionally experiencing some 2 to 3 seconds between echoed typed characters -- and for someone who types 75-100 WPM, this is EXCRUCIATING!
The files I'm currently editing are around 25-50 MB(!), with 40-50 rather large images and my current task is to create captions for each one -- pretty much rendering the "switch to draft mode" option impossible to utilize. Have also (a LONG time ago!) disabled spell and grammar checking. So far, the ONLY solution I can employ is reverting to Word 2011 which I kept installed on my computer for EXACTLY this reason. Any other suggestions?????
Running a 2015 MacBook Pro with latest OS X updates (El Capitan v10.11.6), 32GB RAM and 1TB of SSD drive.
I continue to report these problems to Microsoft (via the "smiley face" link on the MAC version of Office 365 tools) every time a new version comes out, in the hope that, maybe, one day they'll get it fixed!
Hi! I've just upgraded to 15.25 (About Word says "15.25 (160817)") and Dropbox to v8.4.19, and Word seems to be running much more smoothly now. We'll see how it goes...
This is excellent information. Post back as your time allows. In a few days the 15.25 update will be a general release. Try the update. Although I don't think there's anything in this particular update that addresses this particular problem, report back with the results. After each month's update reply with the results. I'm confident Microsoft will eventually will work it out with Apple and DropBox and get it working.
