I had the same issue, I kept getting the answer that it was IMPOSSIBLE from multiple Answer Desk associates!  

After almost giving up, I found a way to download and install the software manually using their own Deployment Tool.  Another good thing about using this tool is that I can keep a copy of the program offline in case I run into issues down the road and want to reinstall Office 2013.

The tool to use is the Office 365 Deployment Tool for Click to Run, normally used for administrators to use for installations across multiple PCs.

After downloading the tool, you just need to edit a couple of configuration files.  One to download the Office archive and one to install the archive.

When you contact Support, let them know you are upgrading your Office 2013 subscription to 2016 and are getting a message that Visio or Project needs to be removed. The support agents are being reminded of this situation and how to resolve it.

Funny.  I have a simple 1920 x 1080 Dell laptop, and I get 30 icons.  It was 38 before.  Back in 2010 days, I had about 50, but the android envy misanthropes already took their cut.  Now yours.  

And give us back clear type.  I am about to drop $800 to get the same screen (2560 x 1440) resolution that 2010 gave me. We all rotating our desktop monitors?  What a bunch of clueless fanboys trying to follow android, while having the finest OS and suite in XP and 2003.  I even accepted  the ribbons at 2007.  But this?  

And to add insult to injury, Windows 10 , or Office 2016, wont let me associate docx files with Word 2010 that I installed to get clear type.  Otherwise Word is unreadable on monitor or screen unless 12 pt.  So now I have to file search for the doc instead of clicking on it.  Such pettiness.  If that isn't spite, nothing is. Ever since Vista, nothing that MS has done has made me change my mind.  Except 8 which was great, so long as you used Start8 interface.   Cretins even made folks pay for the features they dropped.  

Why did these things happen?  It is like out a Franz Kafka novel.  But this time, we get to pay dearly for the torture inflicted by the clueless.  Microsoft actually has focus groups to come up with these diabolical punishments?  Supposedly.

Do you want to associate ONLY DOCX, or all Word format files with 2010?

If is all Word file types, you can use the RegServer command:

Re-register the application

(Note: You may have to adjust the path to the EXE to match your installation. Verify the path before running the command.)

Close the app. Open the Run Window: <WIN> R, use the following command (Modify the Path to match your specific installation):

“C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\winword.exe” /unregserver

The quotes are necessary, but you may need to change the path so it reflects the location of the winword.exe file on your system. (You can use Windows’ Search tool to locate the path to the winword.exe file.) The /unregserver switch “unhooks” all the references to Word in the Windows Registry.

You should then, immediately, use the following command:

“C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\winword.exe” /regserver

“C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office 14\Office14\winword.exe” /regserver

This command causes Word to rewrite all its Registry keys and to reassociate itself with document and template files. Now you can double-click a document file and see if Windows starts Word and opens the document.

Make sure the path is correct for your installation. I have put these files into a BAT file on my desktop so I can run it as needed.

“C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 2010\Office14\winword.exe” /unregserver

“C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 2010\Office14\winword.exe” /regserver

“C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 2010\Office14\excel.exe” /unregserver

Quick Determine Office applications path

• open Excel
• open the Visual Basic Editor (aka VBE)
• open the Immediate window, Ctrl-g (also in the View menu)
• type or paste the following in the Immediate window

?application.path

• With the cursor at the end of the line, ie after “path”, hit Enter

If you want to change only the one file association, you will have to do that through Win 10. It sounds like you know how to, but it does not seem to be working for you.  Is that correct?  Describe the steps you are taking.

Rohn007,  Thanks for the prompt assistance.  Yes, I want to register all Word docs.  The lack of cleartype is unacceptable in 2016.  

In 2013, I could reassign extension associations, but not 2016.   I followed your instructions.  I assume you meant to run these commands in series after unregistering (with my paths):  

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\winword.exe"/regserver

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\winword.exe"/regserver

No luck. Office 2010 came up with the second command, but it seems that first command in 2016 overrode the second.  Plus as you mentioned, this might not work in 2010 anyway.  Which it didn't.   So tried the unreg command again, and then manually reassociated file types in Control Panel.  No luck there either. 

Back to the drawing (cussing) board. MS not only foists this interface on us desktop users, they spend their time trying to make it impossible to get around it, instead of fixing it with a desktop version.   I wish the software people treated their customers with the courtesy that you and Patrick do.  If there was any competition, disasters like Vista and 8 would have sunk the company.  

So I just gotta open docs through the 2010 open command.  A couple more clicks.
