How to reduce the size of quick access toolbar icons? (Office 2016)

With the update to Office 2016 the Quick Access Toolbar icons were enlarged.

I used to have a filled Quick Access toolbar for Excel and now they do not fit defeating the purpose.

Is there any way to reduce the size of Quick Access Toolbar items?

Folks, our shared UX controls team have been following this thread, as well as your requests on UserVoice and are spinning up some work to address your concerns. I can't promise a specific date for getting this work out to you all, but they recognize the impact this has had on those of you who work with customized QAT and are moving very quickly.

When they're done you'll see the improvement arrive as part of the regular updates we send all subscription customers.

It seems to me the reason for the enormously wide QAT icons is to facilitate people using touch screens.

I read somewhere that many of the changes to 2016 were geared to touch screens.

So the 85% of us NOT using touch screens are out-of-luck.

I have 23 icons in my Excel QAT that is above the ribbon.

Putting the QAT below the ribbon takes up even more space.

This new spacing drives the available space one would use to click and drag to reposition the window all the way to the right.

"Try changing the way the entire rest of the display looks"

and

"Try customizing the bloated ribbon feature you're already avoiding"

are not solutions

A "Not Helpful" link would also be appropriate

Dan - yes, agree that changing text size for this doesn't make sense, I've edited my initial post to remove this. I understand your frustration with this, but do consider the other suggestion - taking the most frequent things that you do and mapping them to keyboard short cuts, this will potentially free up enough space for the remaining icons.

I have the same issue with the spacing, and mapping shortcuts is not the answer. A also have a quick access toolbar that overflows now. It caused me so much frustration while building an Access database over the past 2 days, with the extra clicks, that I reverted back to Office 2013 on my desktop at work. I've also decided against deploying it in our business. I spent a lot of time teaching our personnel in three cities how to customize Office 2013 and I can see the complaints already about 2016. I'll keep 2016 on my laptop, though, so I'll know if it becomes usable for non-touch machines.

BTW, the spacing has also been increased in things like the navigation pane in Outlook, so now I can see only about 1/2 of what I used to see at one time on the screen. Again, it now takes more clicks. Not good. I can't do anything about these changes in Office (except complain), but fortunately I control what our business (400+ employees) deploys, so 2016 will be staying off our computers.
