How to reduce the size of quick access toolbar icons? (Office 2016)

With the update to Office 2016 the Quick Access Toolbar icons were enlarged.

I used to have a filled Quick Access toolbar for Excel and now they do not fit defeating the purpose.

Is there any way to reduce the size of Quick Access Toolbar items?

Folks, our shared UX controls team have been following this thread, as well as your requests on UserVoice and are spinning up some work to address your concerns. I can't promise a specific date for getting this work out to you all, but they recognize the impact this has had on those of you who work with customized QAT and are moving very quickly.

When they're done you'll see the improvement arrive as part of the regular updates we send all subscription customers.

    Hi - I don't know of a specific option in Office that will let you do this, a workaround that came to my mind is to map the options you use most to keyboard shortcuts (in the Customize the Ribbon dialog, select the Customize button next to keyboard shortcuts)

    • that has the advantage of keeping your hands on the keyboard and avoiding a touch action or a mouse move/select; and for the most frequent choices it should be easy to remember the shortcuts.

    Out of interest what have you put on your toolbar? [I've added Delete & Address Book in my Outlook set up, but haven't added anything in the other apps]

    I probably could lose some of the items since I know the shortcuts to most of them but I share this toolbar with my colleagues because they are not prone to learn shortcuts.

    I have common use features on the Quick Access so I don't have to switch tabs (it increases screen size for the spreadsheet as well), I will probably have to be more select about which features to have there and just use the shortcuts.

    I share this problem. It has ruined the functionality of the quick access toolbar. This is not an improvement and should be returned to the prior buffering size or at lease we should be given the option.

    I'm sorry this change has impacted the way you work. I was able to get 26 icons on my laptop screen (2560x1440 and text size set at 200% in Windows) and 37 on my desktop screen, how many do you have in Excel 2013? What is the screen resolution/text size that you are working with?

    Now I understand a little more about what you're using the Quick Access toolbar for (to avoid tabbing through the Ribbon to find the commands most relevant to the way you use Excel), I have another suggestion that might help (but as it involves customizing the ribbon) it assumes that you aren't closing the ribbon.

    You can't change the order of the built in tabs, but you can add groups to them, and then export the customization for easy sharing with colleagues.
