How to reduce the size of quick access toolbar icons? (Office 2016)

With the update to Office 2016 the Quick Access Toolbar icons were enlarged.

I used to have a filled Quick Access toolbar for Excel and now they do not fit defeating the purpose.

Is there any way to reduce the size of Quick Access Toolbar items?

Folks, our shared UX controls team have been following this thread, as well as your requests on UserVoice and are spinning up some work to address your concerns. I can't promise a specific date for getting this work out to you all, but they recognize the impact this has had on those of you who work with customized QAT and are moving very quickly.

When they're done you'll see the improvement arrive as part of the regular updates we send all subscription customers.

    Glad to hear you are thinking about it.

    I hope this doesn't mean this will be another way "encouraging" Office 2016 owners to switch to 365. By punishing them with a carpy UI.  Not fair, they are paying customers too.

    I also share your views on the loss of functionality of the Quick Access Toolbars in Word and Excel in particular.  I have noted that all the icons are there but you have to go to the rhs  end of the overly now spacious QAT and there is a barely visible down arrow which will drop down the remaining icons not showing on the initial QAT.  It would be better for all if we could simply determine icon size as an option in Customise the QAT.

    QAT Kerning issue.

    I am in the same situation, having created a custom QAT file so those less technically-oriented can keep working productively with Excel, without having to deal with the fact that Excel continuously get more complicated.

    Now, in 2016, half the shortcuts are not visible in our standard QAT. I am going to have to issue a workaround memo to teach offices across the country they now have to "Look for a little arrow thingy on the right, and then when a new toolbar pops up below the old toolbar you are used too, click on the action you want Excel to take ...... "

    In the short-term, my solution will be the same as Ralph's - prevent the deployment of 2016 until the QAT kerning issue fixed.  I don't have a problem with the size of the icons, just the spacing/kerning between them. Give me an option to shrink the Kerning between Icons on the QAT, and I will be fine.

    In the meantime, I will find the time to try Patrick Conlan's suggestion and create a new tab/group/item combo in the Ribbon, as a workaround for me, because like Ralph points out, the extra click is completely counterproductive.

    Yes, I encourage anyone impacted by this issue to use the User Voice sites to feedback. In this case, as Excel users:

    I'd ask that you try to describe how you use the QAT, how the change has impacted your use of Excel. The more you tell us about what you are trying to get done (and how we are getting in your way) the greater the impact of your feedback.

    I know that *every* engineering team in Office values this feedback, and takes it into consideration when planning work so it isn't just a back hole.
