How to reduce the size of quick access toolbar icons? (Office 2016)

With the update to Office 2016 the Quick Access Toolbar icons were enlarged.

I used to have a filled Quick Access toolbar for Excel and now they do not fit defeating the purpose.

Is there any way to reduce the size of Quick Access Toolbar items?

Folks, our shared UX controls team have been following this thread, as well as your requests on UserVoice and are spinning up some work to address your concerns. I can't promise a specific date for getting this work out to you all, but they recognize the impact this has had on those of you who work with customized QAT and are moving very quickly.

When they're done you'll see the improvement arrive as part of the regular updates we send all subscription customers.

Thanks for the update.

Knowing that a change request has been acted on and now is in the chute for general distribution "soon" (in the next month or so) really helps reduce user frustration.

There was a similar update about the 2016 Style Pane issue, it is in testing and supposed to be released "soon".

I wish MS would do this more frequently.

Sure glad someone at MS is listening. You know MS finally had it right with 7 and 2010. Why they then changed the interface to a smart phone without getting feedback from real users is beyond me. As a result, 8 was a disaster. And 2013 was also a non starter, especially without cleartype.

You are the exception that proves the MS rule. Never give the customer what they want, just ram some teenager's idea of what they want down their throats. You deserve a raise.

Now when are they going to restore cleartype across the board? Excel cells have it, but that is as far as it goes. Should I hold my breath?

We are very close to releasing the change to the Quick Access Toolbar that you've been waiting on for a while. I can't 100% promise (circumstances beyond our control/late breaking issues/unexpected side-effects etc) but it is looking likely that it will be in the next Customer Update (aka the January update) and folks with subscription licenses should see it start arriving very soon.

Here in Office land we've been running the new QAT behavior on our own machines (daily builds) for a while, this is a key part of our quality control process. Additionally our external update preview folks, who help us validate updates, should be getting the change at any moment.

Again, sorry for the pain caused to everyone who relied on QAT customization as part of their own productive Office usage, and *many thanks* for the quick, direct and clear feedback - it really helps us to prioritize work on your behalf.

Hey Michael, Mtn & others - hear your frustration; I'll circle back with an update as soon as I can. I know that on the surface it seems like a trivial change ("just revert to the old code") but UX control layering, new frameworks for motion/touch etc & the work the UX teams to drive snappy performance by leveraging OS changes/new techniques tends to make it a lot harder to unpick this kind of change.

Bear with me and I'll come back as soon as I can.
