How to reduce the size of quick access toolbar icons? (Office 2016)

With the update to Office 2016 the Quick Access Toolbar icons were enlarged.

I used to have a filled Quick Access toolbar for Excel and now they do not fit defeating the purpose.

Is there any way to reduce the size of Quick Access Toolbar items?

Folks, our shared UX controls team have been following this thread, as well as your requests on UserVoice and are spinning up some work to address your concerns. I can't promise a specific date for getting this work out to you all, but they recognize the impact this has had on those of you who work with customized QAT and are moving very quickly.

When they're done you'll see the improvement arrive as part of the regular updates we send all subscription customers.

    Ah now I understand your problem. 

    I am with you. Really, the interface uses half of the screen. But you can turn it off.

    Microsoft would have better gone on vacation for 10 years after Windows xt ...everything worked fine.

    But then stupid apple arrived and since then, every application got "optimized" for dummies. (Or for the complete idiot).

    And today we are back in the times when writing with the fingertips...

    Agreed. The ridiculous ribbon wastes so much space hence the need for the maximum no of icons on the QAT and my request to reinstate the two row option.

    No kidding.  But at least that is better than the 2:1 or worse that it used to be.  Funny how our respective QATs are so different.  Frankly,  why they had to dumb them down for HD displays is beyond me.  They wanted to be Android too much I guess.  I hate the interface.  Why they couldn't keep a classic option is reprehensible.   Start 10 is a major improvement to the OS interface which is still horrible.  Excel is tolerable, since it is sharp and more functional.  But Word? Ugh.  Powerpoint?  Ugh, but there are graphic editors that are pretty cool.  Otherwise clunkier to use imo.

    But hey, we got them to reduce the size of the buttons, so there is hope. 

    Me too.  I too still use Word 2010 as my primary editor. Up to a year or so ago it was 2003 ..

    But I don't see the button size reduction as a win, because they didn't bring them all the way back, they are still too phat!  And frankly, the button images are such blah detail-less blobs compared to 2003 or 2010.  And here it is, a 1:1 comparison!  (the same QAT loaded into both)

    2016 wastes about 20-30% space compared to 2010 AND they even so are less readable!, less "eye friendly"!
