How to reduce the size of quick access toolbar icons? (Office 2016)

With the update to Office 2016 the Quick Access Toolbar icons were enlarged.

I used to have a filled Quick Access toolbar for Excel and now they do not fit defeating the purpose.

Is there any way to reduce the size of Quick Access Toolbar items?

Folks, our shared UX controls team have been following this thread, as well as your requests on UserVoice and are spinning up some work to address your concerns. I can't promise a specific date for getting this work out to you all, but they recognize the impact this has had on those of you who work with customized QAT and are moving very quickly.

When they're done you'll see the improvement arrive as part of the regular updates we send all subscription customers.

    My spacing is NOT back to that of 2013...

    Preliminary details:

    Windows updated yesterday (01/14/16) at 6:02pm.

    Office updates are set to automatic.

    But this is the current state of affairs (to scale):

    The size of the icon picture is the same (which is an improvement as it was bigger - thank you for reducing it) but the spacing still is FUBAR.  The space used by the icon on the QAT is twice as wide and 1-1/2 times as tall as that on the ribbon.  When you start racking up the icons on the QAT, this happens:

    The icons take up more space than they did in 2013, necessitating the use of the dreaded More controls, which defeats the purpose of a QUICKAccess Toolbar.

    I'm not expecting the space used by icons on the toolbar to be the same as that on the ribbon (although that would be VERY much appreciated and once was the case) but I AM expecting it to mimic 2013.

    I now have 26 icons on the QAT and 12 on More controls.  With 2013, I had ALL the icons on the QAT with some room left over at the end, which was handy for experimenting with new commands.  I even had enough room to group icons into logical sub-groups by inserting spacers.

    I can't speak to 2010 as I never used it, since I stayed with Windows XP and Office 97 until I was forced into Windows 8 when XP was no longer supported.  I LIKED Office 97 - I could customize, and selectively call up, whatever toolbars I needed for the task at hand.  (I even liked the little Paper Clip office assistant and his friends.)

    But back to the present - from my Account page:

    After I choose Update Now I get this:

    So, I am at a loss IRT what to do now - any suggestions?  I would like my QUICK Access Toolbar back, please...

    PS  And yes, both 2013 and 2016 ran/run on the same laptop.

    "Spoke with the deployment team and (I had a d'oh moment) they pointed out that subscription customers can do the following:

    1. In Word, Excel, PowerPoint Select/click the "File" tab header
    2. Select/click "Account"

    You'll see a big button on the left called "Office Updates" with the text "Update Options" on it.

    If you select/click the button one of the options is "Update Now" - if we're rolling an upgrade this should pick it up and apply it to your installation.

    I had already been down that route and there was no change to the QAT.  It seems that XenAdmin has also tried this, without bearing fruit.  Just tried again and I have the same message that XenAdmin encountered; "You're up to date!". 

    Wrapping QAT = Quietly Accumulating Torment.
