So I've just received my windows 10 pro today
I tried making my onenote desktop as my default but when i bring up the menu from the right side and click "note", it still brings up the none desktop version of onenote
how do i fix this?

No, I did not restart my computer. As soon as I created the registry entry and exited regedit, I tried clicking on the "Note" tile in the Action Center and OneNote (Desktop version) launched. Would you please verify that your onenote-cmd registry entry looks like the following?
Again, the path to ONENOTE.EXE may differ on your system. I'm running Office 2016 64bit on Windows 10 Pro 64bit.
I have exactly the same system configuration on my Surface Pro 3. The registry values that you mentioned are also equal, but it still doesn't work. The path is in my case the correct one. I've even run it via the windows run form (Win+R).
Maybe it is also because I have a German system or because my Office16 folder is in the Program Files (x86) folder.
Does it also work for other programs for you? I have tried it with fire fox, but still the OneNote metro app opened.
I've uninstalled the OneNote metro app. That may be the difference.
Also, I tried changing the program path to Firefox, and the Note tile launched Firefox (again, without rebooting).
