Making desktop onenote default for windows 10

I just tried this, and while this works to remove the OneNote app, it doesn't necessarily meet the overall needs of this thread. It did set my ONENOTE and ONENOTEDESKTOP protocols to OneNote 2016, but no luck on the ONENOTE-CMD. In fact, it actually made it disapear from my list of protocols. 

This is relevant, because the ONENOTE-CMD protocol is what is used when you select Note from the action center (as the original poster described) as well as when you click the "Eraser" button on the Surface pen (my primary reason for interest in this thread).

Same result for clicking the pen.

Upon reinstalling the OneNote app, ONENOTE-CMD again showed up in my list of protocols.

Will these solutions work in Edge, where you "Make a Web Note", "Save Web Note", "View Note"?  I want it to open my 2010 desktop version (planning on upgrading)?

Use powershell!

Open PowerShell as an administrator

• set-executionpolicy unrestricted
  • type y then hit enter
• Get-AppxPackage *OneNote* | Remove-AppxPackage
• set-executionpolicy restricted
  • type y then hit enter

This removes the OneNote "app" entirely from the machine. Check your default settings and it should be set to "OneNote (Desktop)" across the board.

Well this is really stupid in Windows 10..

So, what was working for me:

1. unpin default onenote from start (right click in metro tile in start menu)
2. select onenote desktop version and pin it to start (all app/microsoft office)
3. start onenote from metro tile
4. popup will come up to make it default, but now it will work and will not forward you to settings
5. enjoy...
