Making desktop onenote default for windows 10

No, I did not restart my computer. As soon as I created the registry entry and exited regedit, I tried clicking on the "Note" tile in the Action Center and OneNote (Desktop version) launched. Would you please verify that your onenote-cmd registry entry looks like the following?


Again, the path to ONENOTE.EXE may differ on your system. I'm running Office 2016 64bit on Windows 10 Pro 64bit.

I didn't read the entire thread, but I did go to the last page and it seems that no solution has yet been posted. I have one to offer:

Note: This solution requires the use of Regedit, with all of the caveats and warnings that normally go along with it. Please heed them, as no assurances are made that this will not melt your computer. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Press WindowsKey-R, type regedit.exe in the box and press Enter.

Locate HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\onenote-cmd

(this may require a lot of scrolling; alternately, you can select "Edit | Find" FROM THE Regedit menu, checkmark only keys, type in onenote-cmd and press Enter)

Right-click on onenote-cmd and choose New, then Key and  create the following key structure under onenote-cmd:

shell (once shell is created, right click on it and choose New, then Key, then type open)

open (repeat for open, creating command)

command

Note that open is created inside shell, and command is created inside open.

While command is selected in the left pane, double-click on the (Default) entry in the right pane. In the field editor that displays, enter the full path, in quotes, to the OneNote desktop app. For OneNote 2016, that's probably "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\ONENOTE.EXE". Depending on your version of Windows 10 and Office (32bit vs. 64 bit or Office 2013 vs. Office 2016) the path may differ.

Exit the registry editor, and click on the "Note" tile in the Notification Manager. OneNote should launch.

Bonus Hack: If you prefer the minimalist "Side Note" format, add /sidenote after the path to OneNote (after the closing quote), like this:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\ONENOTE.EXE" /sidenote

It looks like this may be impossible. According to this Microsoft Support article, "NOTE: The ONENOTE-CMD URL:onenote-cmd protocol can't be changed because it's used for all of the Windows 10 features that work exclusively with OneNote for Windows 10."

Others in this thread have suggested that it likely has to do with the way apps are integrated in Win10 and they were right.

Bummer. It looks like for now the best bet for now may be to use the Windows Feedback app to let Microsoft know how many are dissatisfied by this limitation.
