Excel 2016: double-clicking on a file opens two Excel windows

Since I have upgraded from Office 2013 to Office 2016 (from Office 365 Home), I get the following behavior in Excel:

If I double-click on a [shortcut to a] file, Excel starts with two Windows open:

  • one with the requested document
  • one blank window with no document loaded

Any clue?

    In my view, implementation of Personal.xlsb has not been completely error-free starting Excel 2007. It causes problems and most prominent side effect is this "Ghost Sheet".

    MS should correct this as "Ghost Sheet" is a nuisance.

    One wrinkle on this. I was having the same problems with Win 10 and Office 2016 and Excel opening the personal.xlsb file behind the others. I did not have preview pane turned on, but turning it on and then off seems to have fixed the problem.

    Spoke too soon. After reboot the problem is back. Enabling and disabling the preview pane only seems to work intermittently with further testing. This is an annoying bug that I didn't have with 2013.
