Excel 2016: double-clicking on a file opens two Excel windows

Since I have upgraded from Office 2013 to Office 2016 (from Office 365 Home), I get the following behavior in Excel:

If I double-click on a [shortcut to a] file, Excel starts with two Windows open:

  • one with the requested document
  • one blank window with no document loaded

Any clue?

    In my case, it was an Excel add-in named "MySQL for Excel" which is published by Oracle. I discovered this by:

    1. Run Excel
    2. File > Options > Add-ins
    3. Set "Manage" to "COM Add-ins"
    4. Choose Go
    5. Write down which add-ins are selected, uncheck them all, choose OK.
    6. Test if it's fixed.

    In my case, it was fixed, so I repeated the above enabling one at a time until I discovered which add-in was causing the extra window to open.

    Yes disabling the preview pane solved the problem.   Why does it do that?

    Unhide and open your PERSONAL workbook.

    Go into Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings>ActiveX Settings and select "Enable all controls..." and uncheck "Safe mode..."

    Click OK.

    Hit Ctrl+N to open a blank workbook.

    Click back to your PERSONAL workbook and Hide it once more.

    Go back to your blank workbook and click the "X" on the top right.

    When the Save dialog box comes up, note that it wants to save changes to your PERSONAL workbook. Click Save.

    Should be all set! I just did that for mine and my boss' computers.
