This is Bryan from the Office team. We are extremely sorry to learn that some of you are running into an issue with Office after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 where some of your Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents are failing to open with various error messages, such as:

On Monday, a fix went out to all Office 2013 Click-to-Run users that fixed the Protected View issue that was preventing some files from opening. For those users, the Office applications would launch and even creating new documents worked fine; however, opening some files resulted in various error messages like above. If you haven't already been prompted to install the August update, you can manually trigger by going into an Office application like Word, then select File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
There are other known issues that could also cause similar error messages, but those are not related to the specific Protected View issue. Teams are working hard to determine the root cause and resolve those issues. For instance, if you are running Windows 10 and Office is running in Windows compatibility mode for a prior version, you likely will also experience issues.

Have you gone back to your original Windows os? It worked for me so I will wait until they fix it to upgrade again. Everyday I get a pop up message telling me to upgrade for free. I have a year from July 29 to upgrade free

Found this helpful as i was unable to save my docs in my subfolder, Word/Excel didnt allow me (I have no permission) to save in my sub folders and refer me back to Documents folder and save them there which is not where i want my files to be stored. Anyway after running this "trouble shooting" it seemed to be working fine. Thanks again
The problem is beyond frustrating!! My Windows 7 was working just fine until I got 8.1 on a new computer!
At that point I understood that I would need to upgrade from Windows 8.1 to whatever came next, in this case Windows 10, but I did not imagine in a million years that everything before that would be destroyed in order to force me to buy Windows 10.
Folks, that's what this is all about--to force us to buy the latest version of windows--Windows 10. I don't believe for a moment that that version is not ready for the market. It will be if you are willing to pay for it.
In short, the recent campaign of offering Windows 10 to a select number of clients is a ruse and I am beyond angry! They took a perfectly OK product (Windows 8.1 and before that 7, in my case), and ruined it.

Word doesn't work my Wacom tablet doesn't work. Still waiting for more unwelcome surprises..if I go back to Windows 7 I get the nag screen to upgrade to version 10...sucks!!!
