Cannot open some Office files after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10

This is Bryan from the Office team.  We are extremely sorry to learn that some of you are running into an issue with Office after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 where some of your Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents are failing to open with various error messages, such as:

• Word: “Word experienced an error trying to open the file”
• Excel: “This file is corrupt and cannot be opened”
• PowerPoint:
  • “The application was unable to start correctly"
  • “PowerPoint found a problem with <filename>"
  • “Sorry, PowerPoint can’t read <filename>"

On Monday, a fix went out to all Office 2013 Click-to-Run users that fixed the Protected View issue that was preventing some files from opening.  For those users, the Office applications would launch and even creating new documents worked fine; however, opening some files resulted in various error messages like above.  If you haven't already been prompted to install the August update, you can manually trigger by going into an Office application like Word, then select File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.

There are other known issues that could also cause similar error messages, but those are not related to the specific Protected View issue.  Teams are working hard to determine the root cause and resolve those issues.  For instance, if you are running Windows 10 and Office is running in Windows compatibility mode for a prior version, you likely will also experience issues.

   When I try to open Office applications with Outertech Linkman Pro, I get a message saying:

We're sorry, but (Office Application) has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly. (Office Application) will have to be closed as a result.

   Why does this happen with Linkman, but not when I use The shortcuts in my folder?

I would love to restore Windows 7, but I can't seem to do it.  I will try again. Will I need the Product Key? If so, that might take some searching...  Any help you can provide would be gratefully appreciated.

since installing from windows 7 to windows 10 I cant open my365 office programmes. its starts to open the excel application and the file I have selected, my accounts, and momentarily displays it on the screen and then it just disappears to god knows where. I have tried allsorts to no avail. Arghhhhhhhh somebody  at Microsoft please help I need to do my accounts asap.

I wish I had better news Lawrence, but I still can not get into my Word 2103 or Excel.  I have tried all the fixes and still get the error message and are forced to close the program.   Some fixes start with open file and I am not even able to get into program.  Many users are just going back to version 7 or 8, due to the frustration.  I am trying to stay in version 10, but I do agree with a lot of people who are stating that the back testing of versions 7 & 8 compatibility is lacking.  Good Luck.

I'm having a similar problem with MSProject 2013 (Professional).  It does not recognizes my licence when I attempt to open my program. And, after a few non-helpful messages exits the program, leaving wonder "whats next".

Does anybody have any ideas?

I'm on an annual subscription plan and at this point do not have access to that software so am really paying for something that I can not use. Which is costing me in many ways.

All my problems started when I updated from 8.1 to Windows 10.  The Office 365 package had the same issues and after ~6 attempts to open Excel or Word documents my licence was finally accepted.
