Cannot open some Office files after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10

Hi everyone,

This is Bryan from the Office team.  We are extremely sorry to learn that some of you are running into an issue with Office after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 where some of your Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents are failing to open with various error messages, such as:

  • Word: “Word experienced an error trying to open the file”
  • Excel: “This file is corrupt and cannot be opened”
  • PowerPoint:
    • “The application was unable to start correctly"
    • “PowerPoint found a problem with <filename>"
    • “Sorry, PowerPoint can’t read <filename>"

[UPDATE - 8/25/2015]

On Monday, a fix went out to all Office 2013 Click-to-Run users that fixed the Protected View issue that was preventing some files from opening.  For those users, the Office applications would launch and even creating new documents worked fine; however, opening some files resulted in various error messages like above.  If you haven't already been prompted to install the August update, you can manually trigger by going into an Office application like Word, then select File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.

There are other known issues that could also cause similar error messages, but those are not related to the specific Protected View issue.  Teams are working hard to determine the root cause and resolve those issues.  For instance, if you are running Windows 10 and Office is running in Windows compatibility mode for a prior version, you likely will also experience issues.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused due to this issue!

Sincerely,

Bryan

Hey Gaby, sorry the troubleshooter ran into an issue.  I noticed that the dialog's buttons are in Spanish.  Are you running the Spanish version of Windows where the Program Files folder is generally under "Archivos de programa" or "Archivos de programa (x86)"?  We use environment variables, such as %programfiles%, but perhaps Office was also installed in a non-default location.  I'll work with the team that authored the troubleshooter, so any details will help.

I posted my experience on Facebook with a warning not to upgrade.

Your response, "We are actively working on a fix to resolve this issue" doesn't cut it and the solutions that you suggested are not working either.  Another example of very poor customer service.

Yea, besides those three programs, Outlook 2013 converts to trail version. Add that one to your list. I can't get my emails or send emails. Boy you really have made my life miserable. So Microsoft's paranoia about piracy really has screwed a lot of people who own the product legally.  Why could you not wait to check the legitimacy of Office 2013 at a later date not during a major O/S upgrade. Dumb Dumb Dumb. I am spreading the word not to upgrade if you have office 2013 sp1 until MS fixes the problem. I loaded office 2013 on the win 10 beta with no problems.

There is no abbyy fine reader on my computer. Office 2013 which ran fine in WIn 7 wants to reactivate under WIn 10 but fails saying it cannot find the files on my DVD. My key works I get the green checkmark isn't that enough proof I own the package?
