Disappearing Ink problem in OneNote 2016 + Surface Pro 3

Hi,

I just upgraded to Office 2016 via the Office 365 subscription. Working on a Surface Pro 3 and Windows 10. I am mostly using OneNote 2016 to take handwritten notes using the Surface Pen.

The disappearing ink issue, (that was a problem in the OneNote 2013 edition, until it was fixed), seems to be back: parts of written stuff disappear. I was writing in OneNote 2016, and out of nowhere, parts of what I had written earlier disappeared. Though the issue is not as severe as it was earlier, when the disappearing was very frequent.

This needs to be fixed ASAP, it renders OneNote not very useful for note-taking!

I got a new update for Insider Office.

    OneNote says now:

    "First Release for Current Branch"

    "Version: 16.0.6366.2025"

It seems to have all the updates from the November Update like Web Videos, and fix for some issues with printouts.

I turned Handwriting Recognition back on, and I'll post updates if I see the problem continue.

    Hi Monti

Do you see the ink disappearing at the same frequency as before?

To make sure that the installation itself didn't fail, could you try the following:

    1. Go to either one of the following folders. The path will depend on your device

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\

    or

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\

    1. Find onmain.dll within the folder
    2. Right click and select properties
    3. Go to the Details tab

    5. Copy here the File version and Product version numbers listed.

The latest update contains a fix for a case where we know ink will disappear that matches the description given on this forum. We have tested, verified and validated that change. There can be different bugs that leads to the ink disappearing on OneNote. If you and others are still hitting the bug even with the update, then there is possibly a different cause for that specific ink disappearing bug and we will investigate it.

    Thanks

    Mavis

    Hi Mavis,

    sorry for my late reply,

the file version under ONMAIN.DLL is "16.0.6001.1038"

I've tested it a lot, the problem of disappearing ink while writing is no more present also with automatic recognition on (I don't know the causes of the disappearing ink I found before)

But I tested many times OneNote and I found that ON deletes last notes if it crashes while you are writing (ps: my ON crashes too much time ). Just see the following videos

    https://youtu.be/0SGY-roNT04

    https://youtu.be/bl2J5zkK3ZU

    https://youtu.be/F7aW_EFAW8U

    https://youtu.be/P_GtT1-29ic

Are there any solution to make 1.one note not crashing (it still crashes also after online repair) and 2.not loosing lasts notes if it crashes ?

    Kind Regards

    Marco

The 16.0.6228.1010 version doesn't have the update. I will let you know when the version with the fix is available through the insider program. For now, it's best to keep automatic handwriting off.
