Disappearing Ink problem in OneNote 2016 + Surface Pro 3

Hi,

I just upgraded to Office 2016 via the Office 365 subscription. Working on a Surface Pro 3 and Windows 10. I am mostly using OneNote 2016 to take handwritten notes using the Surface Pen.

The disappearing ink issue, (that was a problem in the OneNote 2013 edition, until it was fixed), seems to be back: parts of written stuff disappear. I was writing in OneNote 2016, and out of nowhere, parts of what I had written earlier disappeared. Though the issue is not as severe as it was earlier, when the disappearing was very frequent.

This needs to be fixed ASAP, it renders OneNote not very useful for note-taking!

    Hi Monti

Do you see the ink disappearing at the same frequency as before?

To make sure that the installation itself didn't fail, could you try the following:

    1. Go to either one of the following folders. The path will depend on your device

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\

    or

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\

    1. Find onmain.dll within the folder
    2. Right click and select properties
    3. Go to the Details tab

    5. Copy here the File version and Product version numbers listed.

The latest update contains a fix for a case where we know ink will disappear that matches the description given on this forum. We have tested, verified and validated that change. There can be different bugs that leads to the ink disappearing on OneNote. If you and others are still hitting the bug even with the update, then there is possibly a different cause for that specific ink disappearing bug and we will investigate it.

    Thanks

    Mavis

    Hi Mavis,

really thank you for your/microsoft interesting in this very big bug

I've updated my OneNote C2R to 16.0.6001.1038 version but when I set Automatic handwriting recognition on, a similar problem seems to still occur: for two times while I was writing with the pen I saw few words (two or three) of a note I wrote before, vanish. So I tried to disable hand writing recognition and than everything went well for hours. But I had many doubts so I tried again to switch ahwr on, but after about one hour the same problem occurred while I was writing. So I switched it off again.

Are there anyone that have tested if the OneNote last update actually solve this problem ?

    Thank You All

Hope that microsoft make OneNote reliable

PS: when I saw words vanish I tried to click on "undo" of onenote and for each click I did, the vanished words came back for a instant than vanish again and than come back again after another click but suddenly vanish and so on. After several "undo" (progressively deleting letters of my last word taken) the two/three words vanished reappear.

The cleaning up issue is more so for the finishing of syncing and saving of previous files before opening the program up again and overwriting files that were supposed to already saved. Nothing to be worried about. I hope this fix that has been supplied has fixed the issue. I don't have to much to do in the next 3-4 days so I will test it out and hope for others to chime in whether it is fixed fully or not.

    Thank you OneNote team!

Thanks for the support Mavis. The issue seems to be gone.

However, Now every time I open onenote I get a "We're sorry. OneNote is cleaning up from the last time it was open"

The only time I've really seen this happen is in conjunction with the ink disappearing issue (This one, and also the old one with the pre-release windows 10)

So I'm thinking either I need to clear some cache somewhere, or you fixed the result of the problem (the disappearing ink), but not the cause (which also causes the cleanup message I'm getting, and the flashing issue that's also reported on this thread)

Do you have any suggestions on what I can do to fix this?

    UPDATE:

It's more sporadic than I thought.

Actually this issue seems to appear if close onenote and reopen it quickly afterward. If I wait a while, the issue doesn't seem to show up. I'll keep watching to see if I notice anything else.

While I would prefer to never see that message, I can live with this. Now I'm thinking the "issue" I saw earlier was just the expected behavior that I ran into because I was trying to quickly close and reopen OneNote to fix the disappearing ink issue.
