When I click on Assign Resources MS Project shuts down ?  Has this happened to others and is there a solution, or suggestions for a good around ?

I reported this problem to my contacts at Microsoft, and they found out what you are experiencing is a bug due to the "presence" indicator that comes through Outlook and Skype for Business.  The bug is now slated for fixing, but there is no timeline on when the bug fix will be released.  In the meantime, please try the following in Microsoft Project 2016 to disable the "presence" indicator for resources:

  1. Click File > Options > Display.
  2. DESELECT the "Online status next to name" checkbox.
  3. Click the OK button.

    Same thing is happening to me. Assign Resources button pressed on ribbon, program aborts.

    Actually, if your project has no resources, it only crashes when the mouse is placed over the resource table section of the "Assign Resources" pop up window.

    I found this solution too.  You can add resources by using the Gantt Chart Resources column in that view. I have been using this work-around for now.  Hopefully, MS will weigh in on the problem as others are surely having the same experience.

    And ... I don't think Project 2016 is a bad choice as you say ... like a new release of any software, it just has a flaw that has to be corrected.

    I have windows 10 with Office  2016 and Project 2016. I am unable to repro this issue.

    Did you try using assign resource option from ribbon menu?

    Also, was Project 2013 installed on this computer before? Did you upgrade Global.MPT after installing Project 2016?

    Yes I did try the ribbon menu. The only way I can add resources to a task is , to be in the Gantt Chart, place cursor in the Resource Names column , open the drop down window and check the boxes. Once the resources are pulled into the task, I can go to Information, click the resources tab and change the units.  Any action that involves "Assign Resources", whether it's through the ribbon, or right clicking on the task aborts the program. At least that has been my experience.    

    Project 2013 was not installed on my computer previously.  I upgraded to Office 2016 and then installed Projects 2016. This is  my 1st time using any version of Project.  Bad choice I think.
