BUG!! Word 2016 fails to print margins correctly / messes up layout (Possible OpenType .otf Font bug)

Hallo everyone,

I am having severe problems with Word 2016, as it does not print the document layout correctly as it somehow messes up the margin when printing.

NOTE: This happens when printing to Adobe Acrobat DC and my physical printer!

My document layout:

• no markup,

• custom margins (set to 1,27cm top / bottom and left / right - my printer can easily handle these...)

• no header or footer

• paper size set to A4 in all settings

The following is picture shows page 1 of my document in "Print Layout"-view. This is how I want the document to look when printed.

Here is a picture of the Print-preview menu. You can see that the Print preview still shows the document exactly as I want it. No problems. No funny settings selected. No "Print Markup" selected.

Now this is what happens when I print the actual document:

The bottom margin changes and suddenly the whole layout is messed up!

Please advise whether this a bug, or some setting I seem to wrongfully configure.

This is really annoying as I sometimes spend hours to get the layout and spacing in a document right, but then when it comes to printing the document, everything is messed up.

    Here is an update:

    I am now running Windows 10 x64 SL v1607 14393.82 and MS Word 2016 x64 16.0.7167.2040.

    I was able to print a 70 page dissertation correctly, from a .docx without the "use printer margin" trick, to a pdf... BUT:

    • used a single line spacing configuration (1.5) for the whole document, no auto numbering and no space before / after paragraph and a 3cm margin top, bottom, left and right.

    I was using a high quality commercial OTF (both light and bold weights and also in various styles.. - meaning 3 or 4 different fonts in one document although from the same font family).

    So my advice to you is to check if using different line spacing values in one document messed the layout up, and also the implications of the space before / after paragraph feature.

    This is by no means a confirmation that the problem has been solved...

    And I upgraded to the latest version of Windows 10 this morning, problem still occurs.

    I thought your temporary solution had fixed all my problems and was about to throw a party..... BUT, we use document properties and when it converts it back to .doc - all those properties disappear :(

    Any suggestions welcome :)

    Hallo fellow Word users.

    Did any of you upgrade to the latest version (Redstone / Anniversary Edition) of Windows 10 and does the problem still persist?

    I hope to upgrade (clean install..) in the coming days and will report back.

    Having the same problem. I have just made the mistake of upgrading from Office 2013 to 2016 and all my invoices are up the chute.

    They're quite simple one-page 2-column landscape documents which I've used for years. Header and footer which spans both colums, custom margins. If I open any of the old invoices, it has pushed the content of the second column (about 2 lines) into the bottom of the first column. If I print this "messed up" layout to PDF without making any changes, it comes out correctly as a single-page PDF with the column content in the right places.

    If I re-adjust the layout (for example by adding line breaks or column breaks) so the content looks like it's in the right column on screen, all **** breaks lose and it prints (both PDF and printer) across 2 pages.

    The whole document is using only one font, Hypatia Sans Pro which is a true type by Adobe, so it's not an open source font issue.

    Document settings both in Word and the printer are correct at A4, telling it to scale makes zero difference. I actually think it's not a problem about the data sent to the printer, I think there is some bug in the way the data is rendered on screen.

    There really needs to be a fix for this, it's really not reasonable to expect the users to guess where their content goes or to have to print to PDF first.
