Please check out<br>Microsoft Word 2016 stopped working for the latest information on this topic.

I had Office 2007 Student and Home Version installed on my computer and recently purchased Office Professional 2016. I uninstalled 2007 rebooted and installed 2016.  Every time I open a file, I get a popup saying, "Microsoft Word has stopped working.  Windows is checking for a problem and will notify if a solution is found." The same problem with Excel.  Powerpoint is working fine.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Hi Debra,

Welcome and thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

As per your description of the issue, I understand that you are facing issues with Word only. Follow the steps mentioned below and check if it helps:

Step 1: Open Office applications in safe mode:

Example: Open Word in safe mode

  1. Close Word.
  2. Press the Windows key+ R on the keyboard to open Run window.
  3. In Run window and type winword /safe

Note: There is a space between 'Winword' and '/'.

If you are able to work with Word without any problem then the issue might be due to add-ins. In order to disable the add-ins follow the steps given below:

  1. In Word, click on File< Options< Add-ins.
  2. Under Manage select COM Add-ins.
  3. Click on GO options beside Manage, uncheck all the add-ins and click Ok.
  4. Try to open Word and check if it works fine.

Note: Similarly follow the steps to disable add-ins for other Office applications.

Step 2: Repair Office 2016 installation:

Refer to the link mentioned to repair Office 2016 installation:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/project-help/repair-or-remove-office-HA010357402.aspx

Hope this helps. Please post us if you need any further assistance with Office.

Thank you.

Hi everyone,

We have an article on support.office.com that helps troubleshoot this error message, including information about how it relates to ABBYY FineReader and other add-ins. Hope this helps!

Best,

-Erik

Many programs install faulty add-ins, most of them without asking first, unfortunately.

    Thank you.

We have reinstalled Microsoft Office 3 times and still every time we try to use Word, the application stops. I also uninstalled a 20121 version of ABBYY FineReader.  Nothing has helped.

    Hi,

It would be great to use File< Options<Add-ins.

But first I have to find where on my screen is File. Sounds silly that I cannot even find the Word "File" anywhere on my screen but I cannot see one.

    I have showing:

    Word

    Recent.

    Last week.

    Open other Documents.

In Open other Documents I have on LHS

    New.

    Open.

    Account.

    Options.

    Feedback.  Plus

    Recent.

    OneDrive - Personal

    This PC.

    Add a place.

    No "File" anywhere.

    Browse.
