Please check out<br>Microsoft Word 2016 stopped working for the latest information on this topic.

I had Office 2007 Student and Home Version installed on my computer and recently purchased Office Professional 2016. I uninstalled 2007 rebooted and installed 2016.  Every time I open a file, I get a popup saying, "Microsoft Word has stopped working.  Windows is checking for a problem and will notify if a solution is found." The same problem with Excel.  Powerpoint is working fine.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Hi Debra,

Welcome and thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

As per your description of the issue, I understand that you are facing issues with Word only. Follow the steps mentioned below and check if it helps:

Step 1: Open Office applications in safe mode:

Example: Open Word in safe mode

  1. Close Word.
  2. Press the Windows key+ R on the keyboard to open Run window.
  3. In Run window and type winword /safe

Note: There is a space between 'Winword' and '/'.

If you are able to work with Word without any problem then the issue might be due to add-ins. In order to disable the add-ins follow the steps given below:

  1. In Word, click on File< Options< Add-ins.
  2. Under Manage select COM Add-ins.
  3. Click on GO options beside Manage, uncheck all the add-ins and click Ok.
  4. Try to open Word and check if it works fine.

Note: Similarly follow the steps to disable add-ins for other Office applications.

Step 2: Repair Office 2016 installation:

Refer to the link mentioned to repair Office 2016 installation:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/project-help/repair-or-remove-office-HA010357402.aspx

Hope this helps. Please post us if you need any further assistance with Office.

Thank you.

Hi everyone,

We have an article on support.office.com that helps troubleshoot this error message, including information about how it relates to ABBYY FineReader and other add-ins. Hope this helps!

Best,

-Erik

See the KnowledgeBase article "How to troubleshoot problems that occur when you start or use Word" at:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/921541

or, see the Article “Why do I get a "stopped working message when I start my Office application at:

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/support/why-cant-i-start-my-office-2013-application-HA104011864.aspx

    Or

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3091375

If that does not help, then you might remove all traces of the Office installation by downloading the fixit from the following article:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501

saving it to your computer and then running it.

Then, after re-starting your computer, reinstall Office by logging into www.office.com/myaccountwith your registered email address and click Install Office.

BEFORE REMOVING THE OFFICE INSTALLATION,  MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE ABLE TO LOG INTO YOUR ACCOUNT AND THAT OFFICE IS ASSOCIATED WITH IT!

If you actually have Office (locally installed) rather than the subscription version provided through Office 365, then you can't get Office through your Microsoft Account. Instead, see
