Please check out<br>Microsoft Word 2016 stopped working for the latest information on this topic.

I had Office 2007 Student and Home Version installed on my computer and recently purchased Office Professional 2016. I uninstalled 2007 rebooted and installed 2016.  Every time I open a file, I get a popup saying, "Microsoft Word has stopped working.  Windows is checking for a problem and will notify if a solution is found." The same problem with Excel.  Powerpoint is working fine.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Hi Debra,

Welcome and thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

As per your description of the issue, I understand that you are facing issues with Word only. Follow the steps mentioned below and check if it helps:

Step 1: Open Office applications in safe mode:

Example: Open Word in safe mode

  1. Close Word.
  2. Press the Windows key+ R on the keyboard to open Run window.
  3. In Run window and type winword /safe

Note: There is a space between 'Winword' and '/'.

If you are able to work with Word without any problem then the issue might be due to add-ins. In order to disable the add-ins follow the steps given below:

  1. In Word, click on File< Options< Add-ins.
  2. Under Manage select COM Add-ins.
  3. Click on GO options beside Manage, uncheck all the add-ins and click Ok.
  4. Try to open Word and check if it works fine.

Note: Similarly follow the steps to disable add-ins for other Office applications.

Step 2: Repair Office 2016 installation:

Refer to the link mentioned to repair Office 2016 installation:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/project-help/repair-or-remove-office-HA010357402.aspx

Hope this helps. Please post us if you need any further assistance with Office.

Thank you.

Hi everyone,

We have an article on support.office.com that helps troubleshoot this error message, including information about how it relates to ABBYY FineReader and other add-ins. Hope this helps!

Best,

-Erik

I have tried to open the Word document in the safe word, but still unable to open properly in order to get to File and eventually manage the add-ins.

While trying to open the Word in safe mode still getting the following message: ''Microsoft Word has stopped working'' followed by ''Microsoft Word is trying to recover your information'', and the document is unreactive to any actions and closes while closing the window with the above message.  Could you please advise on what to do to fix it?

Is there another solution for this kind of problem? The pop up to close the program because of InPageError in Ms Word didn't solve the problem I have. I'll be waiting for response. Thanks.

Which is the exact error message that you see? Which version of Word are you running?
