How can I configure Excel to open only one instance similar to 2010.

Excel 2016 when opened opens only one instance. However, let us know if you are talking about the ability in Excel 2016 to open multiple spreadsheets in the same Excel 2016 window? If yes, then this feature is not available in Excel 2016 and was discontinued since Excel 2013.

    Along with other feature removals, such as alt+underlined key functionality and the removal of format dialogue boxes (in favor of formatting in the right margin), this is another egregious mistake by your team. I am a huge excel user, and when you remove keyboard functionality and other things that cost me hours per week of extra work, it is a big disappointment. Do your product strategists even use excel keyboard shortcuts? Here's some feedback: excel users are about functionality, not beauty. Think about that.

    Why? What would be next? Copy and paste?

    Please make developers put it back. It is essential.

    I thought they have user convenience in mind when they do stuff, but after this I'm sure not.

    You can't default it but if you have the folder with your file in it open click and drag the shortcut into the excel session you want it to open in. This means things like Ctrl + Tab will take you between the sheets in that session.

    Bizzarre that this doesn't happen when you double click, Microsoft have removed functionality that is essential for LOADS of other functions. A good example is if you want to copy\move a tab from 1 file to another; without having the files open in the same session this is impossible. Awful 'update'.

    Loving 95% of the 2016 version but this is just mind boggling, I'll just have to reprogram my brain to use my mouse for the first time in 20 years. What a backward step, Ctrl + O doesn't even work without a mouse now because it takes you to another screen and you have to click the browse button to get a folder up. My productivity just dipped because all the simple keyboard shortcuts to get to my most used folders don't work anymore. Grrrr.

    Thanks for the hint, it helps a lot.

    Until this shift + tab had other apps in the queue, but with this drag & drop file opening method only the Excel sheets are swapping. Great tool. I miss having only one menu ribbon though, but I can live with the new way. (Although I'd prefer that Microsoft would bring back opening multiple sheets in the same window.
