How can I configure Excel to open only one instance similar to 2010.

Excel 2016 when opened opens only one instance. However, let us know if you are talking about the ability in Excel 2016 to open multiple spreadsheets in the same Excel 2016 window? If yes, then this feature is not available in Excel 2016 and was discontinued since Excel 2013.

    I'm encountering same issues.

    Before upgrading to Excel 2013, I had a spreadsheet that opened at least 200 others in order to interrogate their content.  Each workbook being opened within the single instance of Excel.

    Now I can only open 50, which is also slower than before, before PC freezes and themultiple versions of Excel stop responding.

    Real pain.

    Microsoft, please provide a solution to this "feature".

    You can open Excel workbooks in separate instances, however, we have yet to include the option to open multiple workbooks in a single instance.     Excel 2016 forces the user to open a new instance of Excel with each new file opened. This creates an annoying problem for me using the PersonalWorkbook (where I store a million VB Subprocedures). With each new file I open, Excel wants to open another PersonalWorkbook, but conflicts because it can't have two of the same files open at once.

    Is there a way to revert to using only a single instance of Excel??

    I don't know why they don't ask us before changing existing options we are already used to. Couldn't it be a simple checkbox to choose between one or multiple instances!!! I had to downgrade to 2010; only found solution HammerCA!!!
