How can I configure Excel to open only one instance similar to 2010.

Excel 2016 when opened opens only one instance. However, let us know if you are talking about the ability in Excel 2016 to open multiple spreadsheets in the same Excel 2016 window? If yes, then this feature is not available in Excel 2016 and was discontinued since Excel 2013.

I have been using excel 2016 for some time now, however recently (but not all the time) when I have excel open and running and I open another excel file, it opens another instance. I do a lot of moving tabs from one excel file to another and when one of them or multiple of them open in another instance, I can't do that, nor do my macros that I have saved in a personal file work on the 2nd instance. I have seen multiple posts where this should not happen unless you change it, but I did not intentionally change this, how can I go back to having excel only open one instance?

Please help.
