I cannot get Excel 2016 to open and run a file by clicking on the file from File Explorer. Is there a bug?

I had the same problem, but just found the solution. This morning I had Office 2013 installed; then I installed Office 2016 and uninstalled 2013. The problem was that the excel files were trying to open up Office 2013, which no longer existed. Easy solution: right click file, "open with", "Excel 2016... and everything solved!!

I am having this same issue.  I have tried the below fixes but I still can't open .xls or .xlsx files from the network straight from Windows Explorer.

Repair - no option for quick or online repair

    Reinstall

    setting network location as trusted

    Disabled all addins

Disabled all items in protected view

    Disable all File blocks

This doesn't help - just opens up yet another blank excel screen - why can't new excel 2016 open older versions.  I am going to keep looking for an answer on the forum but really this should have been properly tested before release.
